Chance me and i'll Chance Back!!!!!!!!! (UCLA)

I am a high school junior with the year ending in a few weeks. After spending weeks (and probably months) looking through different colleges and their majors I have found my dream school in UCLA. I have visited the campus and researched the school and I feel that it would be a really great fit for me and that I would be happy there. I really want to know if I have a chance of getting in?

Here are some of my stats:
GPA: 3.26UW/4.1W (approx. this is from 10th grade so it is slightly higher now but not sure)
SAT: 1830 (without any prep. plan to retake in June)
SATII: US History(560), Chemistry(560) (might retake both)
Hooks?: URM, 1st gen college, CA resident

Extra Curricular: National Honor Society(voted VP/President), Interact Club(voted junior President), Drama Club(make up crew 3yrs), Art Club(Honorable Mention in County Show), Babysitting (my siblings and other kids), Tutoring (with NHS and for elementary students), Humane Society (since 9th grade), etc.

So basically the reason my GPA is so skewed/low, is because my parents when though a messy divorce spanning my freshmen and sophomore years which resulted in a lot of B's but, I was in my school's IB/PIB program so all of my classes were honors/weighted. But, I got almost 5 A's and 2 B's 1st semester of junior year so it shows an upward trend)

Now here is the tricky part. After 1st semester of this year (junior) my mom got a job offer in California (we were in FL) so, I have go from taking a full IB diploma course load to taking AP Lit, H. Pre Calc., AVID, and double PE(graduation requirement) because the school I am at now does not offer IB.

My senior year courses are a bit better (5 AP classes + H.French III), but I know that the UC's really focus on sophomore and junior year.

So do I have a shot? I really have my heart set so if I don't can you recommend stuff for me to do to get me accepted? Thanks everyone.

1830 SAT and 3.2 GPA is a very far reach for UCLA. You’re EC’s are relatively low though. Try retaking the SAT and maybe take the ACT.

What if I got a 2200+ on the my next SAT (I seriously didn’t try the first time) and bring my UW GPA up to a 3.5?

Additional Info

Senior year course load(scheduled):

AP Gov’t
AP Calc. AB
AP Physics
AP Psychology
AP Language
Honors French III

Junior year course load:

*1st semester
IB HL English/AP Lit
IB HL French
IB HL History
IB SL Chemistry
IB SL Math
IB SL ITGS
IB TOK
*2nd semester (because of move)
AP Lit
Honors Pre Calc/Trig
French 2 (for no credit, just needed a class)
AVID
PE (X2) (graduation requirement)

Sophomore Year:

PIB/Honors English II
PIB/Honors French 2/3
AP US History
PIB/Honors Chemistry
PIB/Honors Algebra II
PIB/Honors Art II

Freshmen Year:

PIB/Honors English I
PIB/Honors French 1/2
AP European History
PIB/Honors Biology
PIB/Honors Geometry
PIB/Honors Art I

Did you include your freshman gpa in that calculation? UCLA will only look at 10-11, and leave PE out of the calculation.

1830 is very, very low for UCLA. You need 2100+ preferably a 2250 to make up for the GPA.

UCLA is going to be a very high reach. Though UCs are starting to be more holistic, they still rely largely on numbers. They also don’t look at “hooks” such as URM or 1st gen. I think you would do better to look at UCSC as a match, UCD and UCSB and slight reaches, and UCLA as a high reach.

What are you interested in studying? If it is math/science, also apply to Cal Poly SLO and Cal Poly Pomona. Other than that, look into more CSUs that you like and have your major.

Of course, if you are dead set on UCLA and dont get in, you could always do CC then transfer.

Just got a report card back, my GPA is actually 3.4UW/4.3W through the UC calculation (10th-11th) I should have about a 4.25

I am working with a tutor right now to prepare for the June SAT and I have been averaging around a 2200 on the practice test.

Will UCLA look down upon the fact that my second semester junior course load is so weak, or do you think they will realize it was because of the move?

Is there anything else I can do at this point to make my application stronger?
Thanks for the responses.

What race are you?

^It doesn’t matter for UCLA.

That’s not true. Holistic review allows UCLA to give extra points to things that knew towards minorities they want on campus.

…seriously?

I thought they didn’t do AA. This is annoying.

Interesting article for insight:

[Karina De La Cruz | For an illegal immigrant, getting into UCLA was the easy part - Los Angeles Times](UCLA said yes. Now, the hard part.)

Wow… That’s horrible. I don’t see how admitting unqualified students helps anyone.

To Waverly:
My dad is African American and my mother is Australian so I am mixed black and white.

As for the article, I am not sure if you were using it to prove a point about race being a factor in UCLA admissions or trying to defer me from applying/attending. If it was the second, as you can see from the course listing I posted I have always taken the most rigorous courses offered at my school (taking 5 AP’s next year, was in a full IB program prior) so I know that I will not have difficulty adjusting to rigorous courses in college.

To alwaysleah:
I completely agree with you. If a student is unqualified and has no valid reason/explanation, it does no good for the student that will think they have what it takes to attend then end up just failing out of all their classes.

I posted it in response to alwaysleah’s post.

I think if u raise SAT to 2100 and GPA to 3.5, ull have a good chance!
