APs: Calc AB, Eng Lang (Self-Study), US History...took all exams in May 09 and am expecting to at least pass all, but I will probably do better than just pass.
Senior Course Load: Psychology Honors, AP English Lit, AP Biology, AP Statistics (ive exhausted all other math classes), AP Spanish, and AP Chemistry (outside of school at MIT).
Other:
~I am the only junior to take 3 APs
~ NOBODY at my school gets a 4.0 GPA
~ I broke my school's 4 AP limit for my senior year because I thought the rule was ridiculous
~ I was in AP Physics this year, but because the class wasn't too good I did not take the exam.
~I transferred to my high school sophomore year, so my rank is lower than it should be and all my clubs are 3 years, not 4.

Extracurriculars:
Captain Varsity Tennis Team (10-12)
Captain Academic Decathalon (10-12)
Math Team (10-12)

Volunteer at Local Food Pantry and Local Homeless Shelter
Volunteer at Local Hospital (one of my passions as I want to go premed)
Job at local ice cream store and grocery store (different time periods)

Okay so here's my newly refined college list, which I fear does not have enough safeties:
Harvard
Columbia
Brown
UPenn
Georgetown
Johns Hopkins
NYU
Boston University
Swarthmore
UMass Amherst
Boston College
Tufts

So, vhhaat are my chances??? Again, I know a lot of these are reaches, but be nice :).

Your grades and scores are great. The schools will know you transferred and that your grades are impeccable for the time that you’ve been there.

Raise that Spanish SAT2 score !! (you know that )

As for your ECs, they don’t really stand out. Remember, the fastest way to show leadership is to start a club. They might get suspicious that it was started your senior year, but hey, it’s never too late!

Good luck and thanks for your post in my thread!!

Your ECs are pretty good, just be sure to go in much more depth in app

Except for the Ivies, I would say you are probably in at all of them
Even for the Ivies, most of them are matches for you, same with Harvard, but you cant be sure

I think you will get into atleast 2-3 of the ivies, and most of the other top LAC and other schools you listed

Hunt, you really don’t think I could get into another of the schools? I mean obviously we both know everybody has a technical chance, but you don’t think I have a good shot? BC is a good match I think because I have kids in my school who went there this year with much lower stats.

I think that what he means is that UMass is the only school where you have almost a 100% chance of getting in, and so you have to be willing to go there if you happen to be unbelievably unlucky. I think you have a good chance at most of your schools, but you don’t really seem to have anything that truly makes you stand out. I think all your scores are definitely good enough (including the 670 in Spanish, because 700 is nearly impossible to break if you aren’t fluent), it’s just a question of how your essays catch the admissions people. Good Luck!

You have a good GPA and good test scores. I would say you are a reach at the ivies, which are reaches for everyone. Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, NYU, Boston College, Swarthmore, and Tufts are probably matches. Boston University and UMass Amherst are safeties, and I do not think you need more safeties than that. ECs are good, and be sure to write excellent essays in order to stand out in the pool of applicants, especially at the ivies.

Thanks sirensong, that makes more sense and I figured that’s what Hunt was implying. I really plan on milking my whole story of being a homosexual in an uberubercatholic school to try and make myself stand out. Hopefully that will work :/.

That sounds like a really good essay topic. If you do a good job, it should really add a lot to your application. Just try to avoid it being a sob story, not that some emotions shining through wouldn’t be beneficial.

These chance threads are making me anxious. I don’t want to have to wait until April to find out where everyone (me included) gets in…
