Chance me as a Hopeful Rising Senior for Early Decision NYU Stern, Cornell, or UMich Ann Arbor

Hi everyone! I’m currently looking into undergraduate programs for finance or managerial economics, as I intend to pursue a career in investment banking. NYU Stern caught my eye as it’s in an ideal location for internships/jobs during my semesters and is relatively close to home, meaning that I would be able to commute which eliminates the cost of room and board. Cornell is appealing because it boasts the Ivy League name and prestige, and I heard it’s also good with providing students with internship and job opportunities. UMich Ann Arbor has another highly ranked business program that I’ve been looking into and also has a very nice campus, however it is further away and more expensive. A vast amount of graduates from my high school have attended NYU, Cornell, and UMich, which makes me wonder if these schools look favorably upon students from my school. I’m not sure how this impacts my chances at getting admitted, if at all.

Demographics : Male, attending a public high school in a school district ranked top 10 in the nation. Both parents went to NYU and about 5 or 6 other extended family members also attended NYU for various different majors.

Intended Major(s) : Finance and Economics, possibly Business Administration as well

GPA, Rank, and Test Scores

  • UW: 93.84, school places GPA on the 100 scale. I know my UW GPA is a pretty low but I think I might still have a shot at some of the T20-30 undergraduate business programs
  • W: 98.49
  • Class Rank: School doesn’t officially rank :frowning: but I am within the top 10-20% of my class
  • ACT/SAT Scores: 1570 (800 Math, 770 EBRW) taken once and I do intend to submit.

Coursework

  • AP World History
  • AP Statistics
  • AP Psychology
  • AP Language and Composition
  • Honors Algebra
  • Honors Earth Science
  • Honors Chinese
  • Honors Geometry
  • Honors Biology
  • Honors English 10
  • Honors Algebra 2
  • Honors Chemistry
  • Honors Pre-Calculus

I plan to take AP Government and Politics, Economics, Literature, Living Environment, and Calculus AB in my Senior year

Awards and Extracurriculars (will be a bit vague here, sorry haha)

  • DECA State Finalist and Vice President
  • Treasurer of a club that highlights Asian cultural traditions and performs for audiences throughout the year
  • Leader of a Taekwondo Club for 3 years, host practices and choreograph performances
  • Paid Tutor for SAT, Math, English, Science, and Social Studies
  • Paid Intern for a medical appliance company, where I oversee product sales and data using various programs, write media pitches to journalists, etc.
  • Varsity Fencing Team Starter: team is ranked 1st in the region
  • Scholastic award for Chinese study from the American Legion, featured in a newspaper.

Essays/LORs

  • I think that my essays are quite strong as of now, but I will wait until they’re fully revised and reviewed before I judge them. I also think that my LORs will be very strong as my teachers like me and have made several positive comments about my work ethic and personality.

I’m considering applying ED to NYU Stern as its undergraduate business program is highly ranked on US News and because of its location. The only downside for me is the lack of the college experience, meaning the campus and dorming with other students. I really value the experience but I would definitely consider sacrificing it for a better opportunity.

Some other schools I have been considering are Cornell, UMich, Carnegie Mellon, BC, WashU, Binghamton, and Baruch. I’m trying to decide between ED Cornell, NYU, or UMich. Please let me know what you guys think and if you have any recommendations. Thank you so much.

Michigan doesn’t have Ed just EA and definitely do that. Since your school is highly ranked I would not discount Michigan but OOS is hard to get and also expensive. See what stats people got into Michigan with and go from there. Have clear safeties also. You have a lot of reaches so far.

In the end, these schools are different. Location. Size. Vibe. Which do you feel most comfortable at ? That’s where to ED.

We need more details. What experiences do you want? Location? City? Big or small?

Any cost constraints? Have you run the NPC?

You need a safety school? Almost guaranteed, affordable and would attend. Assuming BIng is that option?

Surprised Fordham Gabelli and Penn aren’t on your list. If you’re thinking hedge funds they like quants so STEM or CS is an option.

My thought is to ED to the school you love the most and would attend no questions asked. If none meet this criteria then don’t ED.

I really appreciate the advice. Our school uses Naviance and I’ve been checking up on the recent acceptances for these 3 schools. My stats place me comfortably in the middle for both UMich and Stern but my GPA is a little lower than I would like. Some safeties I’ve been considering are Binghamton Baruch and the Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.

I would prefer the typical college experience, which in my mind includes dorming with other students and having an actual college campus. Above all, however, I value the opportunities the university will provide for me, which would include access to internships and job opportunities after I graduate.

I haven’t ran the NPC yet but I don’t think there will be much of a cost constraint if I get into one of my top choices. I also do have Bing, IU Kelley, and Baruch as my safeties and am considering including Fordham as well.

Becoming a quant would be a possibility but I haven’t taken any CS classes. I feel like it’s too late in my career to enter the CS field especially when I see my peers’ achievements and level of work in CS, but I could be wrong.

I would love to ED to Cornell but at the same time their business program has such an astronomically low acceptance rate to the point where I’ve been considering ED’ing somewhere else to increase my chances at a spot in a strong business program. It seems to me that it might not be worth taking the risk and ED’ing to Cornell if I don’t even have a chance at getting in.

Your safety list looks good. You probably could drop it to two schools but that’s up to you. Overall your list looks solid. I think Fordham would be a good add along with a school like Penn. When you narrow your list maybe ask specifically which schools have a boost for ED…if you’re still considering ED. It is binding so be careful.

It’s not too late for CS. You would start with intro classes but if CS isn’t an interest then move-on. That said, a few CS classes are necessary even if you don’t major in CS. You can’t escape tech.

NYU is the opposite of traditional college experience and campus. We did a quick tour kind of by accident while walking to Katz’s. We basically “bumped into” the campus.

I personally wouldn’t count Indiana a safety for their business school for an OOS student. The last 2 years everything has gotten much more competitive. But I think your on a good path. In this climate I like extra safeties that you would enjoy going to. Good Luck.

Kelley has been auto admit (whether in state or OOS) with a 3.8 GPA (w or uw), and 1370 SAT/30 ACT. So OP does meet those criteria. With that said, there are rumors that IU is increasing the direct admit criteria for Kelley this year. We should know soon.

Oh I see. Thanks for the advice I’ll be sure to consider it when making my decisions!

Yea I’ve been trying to do online CS classes through YouTube and Coursera and they look really interesting but it’s difficult not to feel behind everybody else. I would definitely consider taking some introductory CS classes in college since the world is moving towards tech. I’ll do some further research on Fordham; I’ve heard good things about their business program.
