Chance Me Please :] (Stern, Cornell, UChic, Northwestern)

Hi everyone! I was wondering if you could chance me for some of these colleges: UPenn Wharton (or to college of arts and sciences), Cornell AEM (or arts and sciences), NYU Stern, CMU Tepper, UChicago, Northwestern, Brown, and Boston College (Carrol, possibly the honors program too).

I want to major in business/econ. I'm looking to get into IBanking, so please tell me if I have a better shot at a different school within the University as well, and how easy you think it would be transfer to the business school (if they have one) if I don't have a good chance of getting into it from high school. It would also be nice if you note whether I'd have a chance if I go ED/EA and not RD at some of the schools as well!

I'm going to be a senior in high school.
SAT: 2300 (CR:730, M: 800, W: 770); took it 3 times, w/ constant improvement each time. My superscore is 2300, and I got it all from one sitting (my last sitting) as well.

SAT 2:
US History - 790
Planning to take Math 2C and Bio in October (and Nov. if I have to), and I'm confident I can get 700+

APs:
US History (5)
*My school only offers APs for upperclassmen, and the only ones juniors can take are AP Chem and AP US History; the most you can take is 2 junior year, unless you drop more electives or know a language so you can skip ahead a year)

Taking AP Bio, AP Calc AB, AP Spanish, AP English, AP Gov, Honors Engineering my senior year.

Will have 7 years of languages (took 3 years of Latin as well, not sure if have more language courses than one needs will help o_o, but w/e)

GPA UW: ~3.85/4
GPA W: ~4.47/5.4 (note: My school changed how they calculate GPA, they now include gym which isn't weighted, so it's impossible to get above a 4.8 GPA)

ECs:
Latin Club 3 years (4 including senior year)
Stock Market Club 2 years (3 including senior year, possible leader this year)
Chess Club 1 year (2 including senior year; Secretary first year, president this year)
Track and Field 1 year (planning to do it this year too)
Physics League I 1 year (can only take this one year)
Spanish Club 1 year (2 including senior year, possibly a leader this year)

I volunteered at a mental hospital in India for about a month; I have a note as proof and everything. I even have pictures of me working with the inmates.

I did a Columbia Summer Program called "Corporate Valuation," where I learned about economics, econometrics, and finance. I also did a group study/paper on what to invest in during the time period of the program.

Recs: Teacher recs: good (maybe not extraordinary though)
Guidance counselor recs: same as above
I'm also getting a rec from my professor who taught me at the Columbia summer program.

I'm 1st gen (my parents didn't go to college; my sisters who are older have, so I'm not sure if i'd still be 1st gen then)

I'm an Indian national, but I have a green card/perm residency, so I'm pretty sure I don't count as an international student.

Common App Essay: I'd say it's pretty good; shows that I'm a hard worker

I will not need financial aid.

Please chance me! I'll (try) to chance back as well!

Thanks!

You are a serious candidate, my friend! Besides Wharton (which isn’t a guaranty for anyone), it seems pretty certain for everything else. Chance me back!

Thanks! I hope you’re right =/

You have strong grades/scores and very weak extracurriculars. Given this, your chances are decent at NYU and probably Carnegie Mellon, but very low at Penn, Cornell, Chicago, Brown, and Northwestern. I don’t know anything about Boston College.

Thanks for your reply! Do you think I’ll have a chance if I go ED at NU/Chic/Cornell or something? My school has very good history w/ NU and Cornell ED if that helps. Also is there anything else I can do to improve my ECs? I know it’s bad but I was hoping my summer program, research study, and the mental hospital volunteering would help a lot more :/

I think your stats are high enough for a successful ED app at either Cornell or Northwestern. That might be a good option for you. The mental hospital volunteering doesn’t do much because it is over a short period - going to a faraway country to volunteer mostly demonstrates that you have the money to pay for the program rather then any serious dedication, so adcoms often discount such experiences. Same with the summer program at Columbia, unless you made an unusual impression on the professor.

Thanks a lot snipersas :o! (but the hospital thing wasn’t a program, more that i go to india often and decided to help there, but i understand what you mean)
Appreciate your advice/info xD

I disagree with snipersas I think you should go for Wharton ED. Their acceptences are based heavily on the “fit” concept; therefore if you demonstrate sufficient interest in business and entreupeunership you stand a very good chance. In my opinion acceptence to a place like Wharton depends on fit rather than SAT scores and stuff like FBLA.

For example your stock market club and your success within it would stand out a lot for a place like Wharton, but not so much for other places.

Your ECs need work, but it’s a bit late at this point. But it’s great that you have an interest in business. I say go early for NU, Cornell or UPenn (UPenn CAS has great econ program, but I think your shots at Wharton are slim).

@layered210 and noragon

Thanks for the chances!
Hopefully my interest in business does stand out and make up (even a little) for the overall weak ECs. I did a huge paper on stocks/bonds to invest in for my columbia program so I might submit that too as some of the “research” i have done; and I’m pretty sure the paper was one of the better ones in the class (and this was an MBA level class). It was a group paper, though (even though I still did most of the work).

And I also was pretty successful in the Colubmia class (which also had a similar stock-market club game, where I finished in first). Although I didnt do as well in the school stock market game (didnt do badly, just didnt finish first) cuz I didnt know as much about finance until i took this course at columbia…

Yeah I agree with a lot of the posters above, strong stats but weak ECs. I still think that you should apply to Wharton ED if it’s your top choice, because I think that the rest of your resume might carry you through.

Thanks Shaq! I think my choice might be between NU/Wharton ED, possibly Cornell but I haven’t visited it yet so I’m not sure (probably gonna visit soon though =/). Just sorta wanna get HS over with lol
