Chance me as an International Student Needing Full Aid! (Ivies, Duke...etc)

Hey Everyone. I was wondering if y’all can chance me.

Unweighted GPA: 10th grade (93.2%), 11th grade (94%), 12th grade (97%)

Weighted GPA: I’m not sure because my school doesn’t do weighted. But according to the Harvard Law Suit thingy, they calculate the weighted GPA using my IB predicted grades. So I guess mine is a 4.67?

Class Rank: We don’t really have official rankings but my college counsellor mentioned that I’m in the top 2% in my class.

Course load: Full IB Diploma (English A HL, Chemistry HL, Biology HL, Psychology HL, Foreign Language A SL, Math AA SL, TOK) + Taking two regular courses (History and Philosophy)

Predicted IB Score: 43/45

SAT: Unfortunately, could not take. (Test optional)

Intended Major: Chemistry/Biology/Biochemistry

Hooks: I’m not sure if I have any but I’m low income yet very accomplished (I think). LGBTQ+

Background: I go to the number one private school in my country and I’m on a full merit scholarship.

Awards: Distinguished Scholar all years of high school, international service award from a UN competition, Winner of School Science fair Competition, Ranked top 5% nationally in official exams in 9th grade

Letters of Recommendation

-Chemistry Teacher: 10/10. I’ve known her for 3 years and we’re really really close. I’ve worked on a research project with her so she knows me very well.

-English Teacher: 10/10. I ADORE HER. She loves me and we connect a lot on a personal level and she knows about my many struggles and the obstacles I’ve faced.

-Math Teacher (submitted to some): 10/10. SHE ABSOLUTELY ADORES ME. I usually help her out with the lectures and she knows how much I help my friends with homework, studying for exams…etc

-Lab mentor (Supplemental Recommendation): 9/10. I’ve known her for like 4 years now and she literally knows everything about me. But it was the first time that she ever wrote a letter for anyone so that’s why I said 9/10. As for the content, I’m sure she spoke very highly of me.

-Counselor Recommendation: 10/10. I’ve known my counselor for two years because I met her very early on. She has helped me with so much and she told me that she really poured her heart and soul into this letter and that it was the longest letter she has ever wrote for someone. So yeah.

Extracurricular Activities:

-Interned for a professor at an Ivy League University over the summer. Internship was on molecular biology, genomics, cancer research…etc

-Interned at a private university in my country for two years, worked with a professor and his undergraduates on a research project in organic chemistry

-Interned at a Medical Lab for three years. Learned a lot about analyzing blood specimens…etc

-Founded a service organization to encourage the youth to become more engaged in their community. Organized a bunch of projects which I detailed in my app (Climate strike, Relief Plan…etc)

-Founded a club in my high school to bridge the gap between socio-economic classes and education. Tutored students from refugees, organized book drive…etc

-Co-founded a sustainability project based on the UN development goals and partnered up with a bunch of NGOs.

-A bunch of other minor ECs (President of Chemistry Club, Vice President of MUN Club, Medical Assistant at a hospital, started a Chemistry Blog for kids who are eager to learn more about chemistry and now have over 400+ students,…etc)

Essays

CommonApp Essay: Talked about the resilience I’ve built up over the years due to the many obstacles that I have faced (Abusive father, financial hardships…etc). My college counselor and my English teacher both said that it’s the best essay they’ve ever read.

Supplemental Essays: I’m not too sure but I’d say they’re above average. I really poured my heart and soul into them and I was being myself the whole time. So hopefully they’re great.

I guess that’s it. Let me know please!

Most of these schools are need aware, so your financial need will be considered when you apply. Please keep that in mind.

Your chances…well…10% or so get accepted to these schools…with 90% or so rejected. The odds for most applicants isn’t terrific.

Not hooks.

You seem very qualified. Unfortunately as an international, that puts your chances at about 2% for the Harvard tier.

Alright. Thank you so much!

Yeah I thought so as well. I mean I think I’m a strong candidate since I’ve made use of all the resources available despite my harsh circumstances, but yes being international will definitely reduce my chances. Anyways, thank you so much for your response! Means a lot.

You seem qualified. Keep your hopes up.
