Chance Me at Top Econ Grad Schools

Hi guys, I’m a Junior at top southern private university, and I’m starting to think about what to do after college. I’m really strongly considering going into Econ Grad school, and I was wondering what tier of schools I should be aiming for.

Stats:
-Majoring in Econ and Math, Minor in Physics

-3.7 GPA (I should have this at least up to 3.75 by the end of the year). My GPA is basically the same for my major and non major classes.

-In math, I have taken Real Analysis, Linear Algebra and am taking Statistics and Topology now.

-In econ, I have taken intermediate macro and micro, and a slew of electives. I'll take econometrics next year.

-Next semester I’ll be doing study abroad with the INSTEP program in Cambridge studying Econ.

-Additionally, I will at the end of the semester have written a law journal article with a few friends that I am 99% sure we will be able to get published. (Not sure how much this matters since it will be a law journal article).

-Worked last summer doing research with a professor in our Economics department and I am confident that he will be able to write me a good letter of recommendation.

-I could write about other work experience/extra-curriculars, but I am not sure they are important. Am I correct?

-Finally, I have not taken the GRE’s yet, but I am a math major, and generally test pretty well, so I am confident that I will get near an 800.

So what do you guys think? I can give you any additional information that you need. Do you think I could get into an NYU or a Columbia? Where should I be aiming? What else can I do at this point to boost my chances (I’ll work on an Econ honors thesis next year, but it won’t be done in time for applications)?

Thanks in advance,
Mysteriousb

Bump becaue I am desperate for info.

nothing particularly distinguishes you for a T10 school, but you probably have a chance at C and NYU. Your math background is a plus

I think as long as you do well on the GRE you will get in.
I am applying to Columbia grad school too but will be in the school of the arts. Same GPA as you(3.75). I am still undecided about NYU. The Competition is ridiculous. Anyway, perhaps I’ll see you there. Good luck!

Thanks for the input guys. I am still a bit worried. There seems to be no consensus on what it takes to get into these schools - at least like there is for undergraduate.

That’s because they’re two completely different animals. Numbers and well-roundedness get you into undergraduate. Graduate admissions are about focus and fit (both (1) for potential to succeed in the program you’re applying to, and (2) how likely you are to find faculty who do research you’re interested in). They’re also much more selective with departments commonly only accepting 2-5% of applicants, so what was ‘competitive’ one year may be in the reject pile the next.
