Chance Me at UMich, UChicago, Barnard, Columbia, Wellesley, Princeton, Vanderbilt, Georgetown?

I know it’s a lot, but I’m super nervous about all of these decisions coming soon. I applied EA to Umich and UChicago; got deferred to UChicago and I don’t know what course of action to take. I have been accepted to MSU and Ohio State- at the latter, I received the Morrill Prominence Scholarship (full tuition)

Major: Political Science
SAT: 1430 (700 Reading, 730 math) - I know it’s not my strongest suit. My highest sitting is 1380 (for UMich, who does not superscore)
GPA: W: 4.01 UW: 3.87 (I have one B in Algebra II my sophomore year, but I currently have over 100% in AP Calculus)
APs: APUSH, AP GOV, AP Physics, AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB, AP Psychology, AP Environmental Science, AP English Literature & Composition
My Schedule this year: AP English Literature & Composition, AP Calculus AB, French 3 & 4, AP Psychology, AP Environmental Science, Chamber Singers (highest-level choir at school)
Extracurriculars:
Thespians (my troupe is affiliated with the International Thespian Society; I am the Historian. I’ve been involved since I transferred to my current HS halfway through freshman year; contributed 500+ hours)
NHS (got inducted my first year of eligibility, Executive Board member)
I work at Meijer (local grocery store-I work full-time during the summer and 15 hours during the school year)
Kids’ Food Basket (a local organization that provides take-home dinners to undernourished/underprivileged children. I volunteer there multiple times a week. We just established a farm where we grow our own produce to serve in the dinners. I’m also a member of their Youth Action Leadership Board.)
Student Council (got elected my senior year)
GSA- I founded the GSA at my high school when I transferred there. I had to attend a lot of meetings with the principal and school board in order for it to get approved, but it was worth it. I live in the most statistically conservative county in Michigan and our GSA has been able to do a LOT to encourage tolerance and acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals in our community.
Music-been in choir since freshman year, top level choir, playing piano for 10+ years
Voices- I co-wrote a play entitled “Voices” with my friend the summer before my sophomore year. It’s a series of monologues about the LGBTQ+ individuals in our community, and it was selected for performance at both the Michigan Thespian Festival and the International Thespian Festival.
Photography- I guess this is my one “quirk” that UChicago could find special about me. I travel across North America photographing musicians in concert. I don’t have affiliations with any publications or websites, so I don’t have a press pass. My photos have been featured and used by some of the artists, including Alabama Shakes, Tegan and Sara, Post Malone, and Bishop Briggs. I wrote my Common App Essay about it.

Other opportunities: I attended a session of the Michigan House of Representatives with my local Representative, got to shadow her for a day

Demographic: white queer woman, legacies to UChicago (law school) and UMich (mother and two uncles)

(I’m so sorry about how long this is-I just really want to know if I have a shot!)

Also-information about my school: not the best by far. ~80% of students go to CC or local university w/84% acceptance rate. Sent one kid to Brown in 2016, one to Harvard in 2017, and one to Wellesley in 2018. Approximately 6-10 kids go to Umich every year. Extracurriculars are limited when it comes to my major; no Model UN, debate club, quiz bowl, etc.

You have done what you can.

Nobody here can tell you anything useful.

At this point you need to distract yourself, so that you don’t just sit and stew for the next while. So:

  1. Get off CC until results come out

AND

  1. Pick a couple of things to be your ‘anxiety busters’ and do them whenever you start feeling anxious. Something physically active is strongly recommended- dance in your room, go for a run, vacuum the house- anything that makes you physically move. Also recommended is doing something for somebody else: visit an elderly neighbor, do your Mom’s least favorite chore, write letters to soldiers who are deployed, volunteer at the animal shelter: anything that gets you involved in doing something not about you.

And come back in April and tell us how it turns out!

How important is the full tuition scholarship to you & your family ?

Even though the University of Chicago superscores (I think) SAT results, if admissions committee members see the 650 Reading score–and they may or may not, I just don’t know–it will be hard for them to ignore it in my opinion.

My suggestion is to remain as a RD candidate for the University of Chicago while investigating your other opportunities–especially at OSU with a full tuition scholarship.

P.S. If I had to make a guess, my best guess is that you will not be admitted to the University of Chicago.

@Publisher the full tuition scholarship I got is a huge factor to me, but I am worried that I won’t like the school. I feel a lot better because I just got admitted to Umich.

Congratulations ! Michigan is a great school which offers incredible opportunities to all students.

Hey, as a Columbia class of 2022 who has gotten into almost all of the top 10 universities I believe I can give a good insight. To start with your GPA is too low for UChicago, Columbia (not Barnard), and Princeton. These three schools have average SATs that are around 1530. Even my SAT score was below average wıth 1510. Your GPA is not as weak as your SAT but it is still on the low side of the average as most Chicago, Princeton, and Columbia students usually have GPAs of 3.9-4. So, what I am trying to say that is SUPER unlikely that you will get into these three universities.

However, is a recommendation for you. Your stats are a match for Barnard. As a queer female interested in politics, you will see that Barnard is a perfect fit for you. You can take a lot of your classes from Columbia, as well. Your diploma will say Columbia University, too. So, you SHOULD go there if you get in.

Wow I know quite a few students with much higher SAT and GPA were rejected by Michigan and didn’t get the full tuition from Ohio State last year.

Got rejected from Barnard today. Really surprised and a bit sad.

I’m so sorry to hear that. Good luck on other schools.
