Chance me at UVermont, Western WA, UW, Wesleyan, UDelaware, Penn State, CU Boulder, UMaryland

I appreciate you sharing those thoughts. We’ve been concerned with being perceived as just looking for a safety, but as so many people here said, since she didn’t have many APs, and isn’t taking tests, she might not be that competitive. Regardless, she met in person with her admissions director at school and they have exchanged email several times, and she knows UVM is her first choice, so we’ll hope that is a big enough indicator.

Congrats on having an in at #2.

I don’t think ED at a lower profile school will impact admissions chances, especially in year one.

I think she gets in or doesn’t based on her merits. The 4.0 is great.

I don’t believe in yield management because the yields are already so low and this is a public. I know others disagree and that’s fair. If yiepd management is a thing then 98% of schools are failing with UVM at a mere 15%.

My initial concern was rigor because you have a 4.0/4.1 but you pointed out numerous ap classes. So it must be the weighting that only gets you to a 4.1.

But as I said earlier I think you get into UVM. Now I’m not sure if you will then make a financial decision vs WWU or go to UVM no matter what.

I personally don’t see ED as a need here.

That she’s in at #2 is awesome. So if that’s worst case it’s a fine problem to have.

Good luck.

All colleges are concerned with predicting yield accurately.

Some colleges are concerned with trying to raise yield. These typically consider level of interest.

Any business is concerned with close rates, etc. I get that.

I’m simply saying - I don’t see a case where UVM says - well, this student is too good - we’re not taking her.

Just my opinion.

In this case, the student has demonstrated interest but I think the decision will be the same regardless. UVM knows they have a 15% close rate and they’ll accept accordingly.

Now ED could lessen the reliance - but on the other hand, you might see an even lower EA/RD yield than past years - equalizing to the normal level.

We’ll never know as they don’t break it down - but if I was OP, I’d be feeling confident - is all I’m saying - especially knowing that the #2 is already in the bag.

University of Vermont says in its common data set at https://www.uvm.edu/sites/default/files/UVM-Office-of-Institutional-Research-and-Assessment/CDS2122.pdf (section C7) that level of applicant’s interest is considered.

Yes I looked b4.

But we’ve all heard stories of top kids expressing no interest getting in at DI schools and high interest kids not getting in

Back to OP - I think they’ll be ok.

Of course we know only when they get their acceptance.

Good luck to them.

@bethy1 @cliffordstower Did your daughters year anything back yet?

I’m posting this reply for future students or parents who find this post in a search of one of the schools and get nervous about the conversation about whether her coursework rigor was lacking. I did sure felt nervous about it. Anyway my post was about Univ Vermont, Western Washington, UW, Wesleyan, Univ Delaware, Penn State, CU Boulder, Univ Maryland. She ended up applying EA to Univ Vermont, Western Washington, Univ Delaware, and Penn State. She got into all of them. She has a 4.0 gpa and all of these schools thought that was worthy of acceptance, even though she “only” took a few APs (her school doesn’t offer very many, nor do they offer more than a few Honors classes), 2 community college courses (her school doesn’t offer dual enrollment courses), she didn’t have test scores, and her school doesn’t rank.

She didn’t end up applying to Wesleyan, UW, Boulder, or Univ Maryland.

Hi! So our daughter ended up not applying to UVM. UW doesn’t come out till March. She did apply to Udel but it was RD and she hasn’t heard yet. Udel is probably the school that checks the most of her boxes although we haven’t visited yet. If she gets in and if she gets some OOS merit then we will visit for sure. Sounds like your daughter has done great so far! Is she leaning toward any one particular school?

Thanks and I’m :crossed_fingers: for yours as well! She committed to UVM.

Yes, my daughter was admitted EA. We are attending one of the upcoming admitted students days. She’s not committed yet but it’s her number one right now.

@TLZT congratulations to your daughter! I looked back at your first post…and I thought her rigor was just fine!

Your encouragement made me feel more confident. We live in a hyper-competitive area and her school is hyper-competitive with a large percentage of people applying and getting into elite colleges. The pressure is tremendous and students who are not into that scene end up being made to feel like they will never succeed. From the start we encouraged her to find schools that would appreciate who she is instead of worrying about trying to compete for something that would make her feel less-than like her high school has. There is so much pressure for these kids to be perfect. Anyway, that’s my way of saying thank you for helping me stay grounded and reminding me that an excellent student can be valued even if they don’t always have 15 APs, 12 honors courses, test scores, etc.

I just wanted to say that I appreciate you helping your daughter stand her ground and not buy into the hypercompetitive Bay Area school scene. We too live in the Bay Area (Marin) and while my D22 has always taken to academics and the structure of school, loves to take challenging classes and met the competitive vibe with enthusiasm, my S26 is much more into his own thing. He’s super smart and he’ll do great things, but he’s going to do it his way. He couldn’t care less about being the top of his class or competing to take the most APs. It’s his journey and I look forward to helping him find the right fit in a few years! Congrats to your daughter on UVM!
