Chance me!- Athletic recruit

Hello,

I am looking for a chance me at Johns Hopkins University and some advice. I am applying ED there and I am being recruited; however, they did not guarantee me admission when they did the pre-read because I did not have an SAT score to submit at the time.

A little bit about me…

  • I go to a very competitive public high school in MA. Many people each year get into Ivys and top 20 schools. My school only offers two APs in Junior year. Senior year is basically the only year you can take all APs. Honors are basically the same as APs, if not harder. I do not know anyone with a perfect GPA because classes are so hard...
  • Stats: FRESHMAN YEAR NOT COUNTED (idk why they do this)

3.74/4.0 -unweighted

4.56/5 -weighted

-Honors and AP classes count as 5.0

  • I took mostly all Honors and APs
  • 2 B+, 1 B freshman year, the rest all As
  • 2 AP Junior Year, 4 Senior Year (although our honors are basically same level)

I already applied test-optional, but I had a new SAT SUPERSCORE of a 1410 come in. I know it is low for JHU but I am wondering if it is worth submitting because I don’t know if it will hurt my application that much.

  • EC's (this is def my highlight)
  1. National Competitive Fencer
Fenced nationally and regionally in competitions during the school year; qualified 5x for National Championships and USA Junior Olympics. Being recruited.

  2. Co-Founder | Project Driveway
Built a nonprofit service for volunteer teens to deliver groceries to the elderly during COVID. Fulfilled over 500 orders. Recruited over 50 volunteers.

  3. Founder
Ran a 6-week long program to teach fencing to children with special needs. Managed scheduling & created individualized curriculums for the kids.

  4. Club President & Member | Jewish Student Union
Created and ran events on a weekly basis. Advisor to underclassmen to welcome them to high school and involve them in the Jewish community at school and beyond.

  5. Volunteer Coach | Carroll Center for the Blind
Taught 20 blind and visually impaired teens to rely on other senses and (re)gain confidence through fencing. Explained blade work through words and feelings.

  6. Club Member | Best Buddies
An after school club that helps expand social opportunities to classmates with special needs through various games, crafts, & other activities.

  7. Club Member/Volunteer | One Night Out
A program that allows parents of children with special needs to have a night out while volunteers engage their kids in fun activities.

  8. Pianist | 12 Years
Performed at two non-competitive recitals per year. Keynote pieces: Prelude in G minor - Rachmaninoff, Nocturne in C# Minor (N20) - Chopin.

  9. Counselor in Training | Camp RSM at Sunapee
Volunteered 28+ hours a week for 2 weeks at an overnight camp assisting camp counselors, cleaning bathrooms, washing dishes, & caring for children.

  10. Peer Leadership Fellow | JTI Boston
Selected from over 100 applicants to participate as a paid fellow for a Jewish community teen leadership initiative.

  • I think my personal essay is good, but maybe I'm biased. It is about how I got into fencing but I soon realized my brother who has special needs did not have the same opportunity as I did.....then I talk about how I created a Fencing program for kids with special needs.....it is sort of hard to explain but I think you get the point.
  • Recs. One rec is from my math teacher (I want to be an Applied Mathematics major) and I think it will be an average rec. Another rec is from my English teacher who is known in my school to give REALLY REALLY good recs. It probably helps that he told my parents last year that I was the "model student"....

So my question is A) How good of a shot do I have (already applied ED) and B) Do I submit the SAT score?

This is my first time posting here, so please be nice! Thank you so much!!!

Ask the fencing coach if you should send the score, s/he should be knowledgeable about how admissions looks at recruits and what scores they want to see.

You sound like a great kid, who will end up at a great school. (I can’t chance!). Good luck!

Agree, ask the coach. 1410 is pretty good, but this depends on what the coach is trying to achieve, and how much support he/she will give you. I know for Ivies the general rule of thumb is that an athletic recruit has to be within 1 standard deviation of the non-athlete academic index. A 1410 would put you comfortably within 1 sd for all of the ivies perhaps except Harvard.

My guess is that 1410 would be fine for JHU, but no one will know for sure except the admissions office. Be blunt with the coach “Will I get accepted with these scores?” or else they may string you along.

You should also check with the folks on the athletic subforum here. There are a bunch of people who frequent that sub who are a lot more knowledgeable.

I agree with @cinnamon1212 . If you were my kid, I would advise you to contact the coach, present him with this score and see if he thinks if it will help. The head coach I believe has over 15 years of experience there at JHU. He seems transparent. He will be able to guide you; that test score might give you an edge over those without scores. You have a great overall academic profile. Good luck to you. Fingers crossed!!

I asked the coach and he said that he doesn’t think my pre-read will change. He thinks that if he were me he wouldn’t submit it; however, my parents want me to submit it and my friend who is on the team told me to. My friend also said she knows someone who got in with a 1370 from her school. My parents think that submitting the score won’t necessarily help me, but it will show admissions that I didn’t do horribly on the SAT. Now I am unsure what to do. @cinnamon1212 @smileymomma @sgopal2

The coach will know best, for sure, especially if they have been there for awhile.

Is there anyone else familiar with fencing recruiting you can ask? Your club fencing coach?

The purpose of a pre-read is to give the coach a sense of what your chances are. Generally they will be 1) Thumbs up 2) Thumbs down or 3) Maybe. It sounds like your pre-read was “Maybe”. If the coach is now saying that a 1410 would still leave you as “maybe” then I would argue its not a good sign.

I’m not that familiar with Division 3 recruiting rules, but this might mean that the coach doesn’t have you that high on his/her list. Some schools use a tip/slot system, and others rely on the coach’s evaluation. Did the coach explain this to you? Did you ask how far down the coach’s list you are?

The worry I have is that the coach is interested in you, but not enough to give you a full slot. He/she may be hoping that you will get in on your own, so that the slot can be used on someone else. Note that JHU middle 50% for SAT is 1500-1550. A 1410 would probably put you at the bottom 20-30%.

You need some help. I’m going to page one of the most respected parents on this forum. His child went through the fencing recruiting process and he knows a lot more than me: @SevenDad
