I live in California and I received at least 6 mailers from UNC including an application I never requested and scholarship information. I can’t imagine UNC soliciting people like me if it’s so hard to get in for OSS. If this is true, just apply to Duke instead. Your numbers are good enough.

I think you’re in at every school except Penn and then you still have a decent shot. In my opinion, class rank, SATs, and GPA can only do one thing at a school like Penn: Be high enough to get you into the pile the adcoms consider very carefully. I think your scores accomplish this. From there, your essays, recommendations, and passions will determine whether you get accepted. Do a good job with these and then you’ll have a decent chance at Penn, too. Good luck!

State law in North Carolina limits OOS student body population to 18% of the total. This translates to roughly 800 spots. Additionally, 10% of those spots are set aside for OOS legacy candidates. In 2006, the OOS acceptance was 19%, (lower than Cornell’s and only slightly higher than Penn’s 17%). Since 2006 OOS applications have continued to increase with unconfirmed reports of 10,000 apps for the 800 slots, (8%). I congratulate HopeFull on UNC’s interest, but the OP is from a region of the country that submits a large number of apps to UNC and the admissions statistics simply don’t support viewing UNC, (or Penn), as anything other than a reach.

Thanks for the feedback especially concerning UNC…
now I’m curious
