Carnegie Mellon, UC Berkeley, USC, Georgetown, and NYU (all business programs)

I am a junior in high school. Lets start with the good: My first SAT was a 2100 (800 math, 630 verbal) but my second one will most likely be above 2200 (Ive greatly improved my critical reading scores). My PSAT score was 223 which means almost definitely a national merit scholarship. I also an excellent essay writer, and have had to endure my share of challenges. Im also a minority. Ive done countless hours of volunteer work through church mission trips and boy scouts. I am currently working in a CPAs office doing basic accounting, and the CPA is lending me out to lawyers to do work for them. Im also a soccer letterman so playing soccer at a division II or III schools is an option.
The bad: The only bad is my grades. Im taking ALL honors classes (and the hardest honors classes and am an IB Diploma candidate). I will probably not be in the top 10% at my school, but definitely the top quarter (of a class of 1000+), my GPA is probably around 3.2-3.3ish unweighted (about 4.2 weighted) rigor is MOST rigorous. Do the goods outweigh the bads in this case and give me an alright shot at these schools? do you have suggestions for schools that i am better suited for or ways to beef up my chances?

CMU is going to be an uphill battle. I think it’s possible, but you really need to try and boost your GPA substantially before the end of your high school career. You’ll be competing with kids at CMU who have 3.7’s and 3.8’s unweighted and have laundry lists of EC’s. Just try and bring the GPA up a bit more and you have an alright shot. Just make sure that happens if you are seriously considering CMU as a choice.

But judging by the rest of the schools on your list, CMU will probably be your best bet. NYU’s business program is probably the most competitive program until you start moving into Ivies, so I would just work on the GPA and bringing up the SAT’s like you said.

With that in mind, I wish you the best of luck! :)

Ok cool. And by honors i meant AP (or IB, the AP equivalent). Im sure i can make straight As the first semester of my senior year

Also suggestions for matches would be nice.

minority as in URM?

GPA definitely hurts. SAT is not too impressive, but it’s passable. ECs aren’t bad, but nothing special.

It won’t be easy. You OOS for UC berkeley? You would have a good chance if in-state.

If you can boost that GPA you can get into CMU no problem cause I go there… I mean I had a 3.7 unweighted but my SAT was only 2100 so definitely not impossible for you… also, what school do you think you are you applying to for CMU?

Well either tepper, or the humanities school. Either business or economics. Im very math inclined so maybe even applied mathematics sorry idk what schools are except tepper

Also vassar and vanderbilt look great to me, are those any more within my range?
