I graduated from high school with a 1.8 GPA and dropped out of CC after failing/withdrawing from every class I attempted. I grew up in an abusive environment and suffered from sever depression that made school impossible for me. Since then I have been going to therapy and have gotten out of my abusive environment. I went back to school after paying off my debt with money I couldn’t really even afford to spend. Since then I have been pushing myself with an overload course schedule while maintaining a 3.8 GPA. On top of this I tutor and participate in the art club, engineering club, and diversity club. I was also chosen for a special honor where the faculty at my school select their seven favorite students out of the 6000 students enrolled. I’m from nowhere, Missouri and I dream of one day going to a prestigious school in/near a big city. So, do I have a shot? What kind of schools should I be looking at?
Apologies I’m writing this slightly tipsy - Additional info I forgot to include:
26 ACT, I know this isn’t so great, but I only took it once and that was with no studying back before I started trying in school. I also have been diagnosed with ADD and I get extended test time at my current school. I’m looking into getting extended test time on the ACT as well.
I’m a white male. I’m also gay but idk if any schools factor that in.
I love make-up and fashion and in my spare time I perform drag at a local gay bar.
I am guessing from your post that you need significant financial aid. Is this correct?
I wouldn’t underestimate the value of your local in-state public school. A lot of students do very well with degrees from their in-state school. Other people are going to need to comment on alternate schools since I am not very familiar with your part of the country. Do you care how far away a university is from Missouri?
Yes, I will be needing financial aid to cover most of my expenses. I don’t care how far away I have to travel. I would actually prefer to move far away. I would ideally like to go to college in an area that has a prominent gay scene.
if you can create interesting essays demonstrating your abusive past , but in a way that shows that u learned from that experience and etc. then i guess u ahve a good chance in the ivies
