Chance me: Cornell ED (CA resident, IB diploma, top 10 in school, 4.36 (w) GPA...) [3.96 GPA, 1400 SAT superscore]

I’ve been considering ED2, but I’m cautious to choose a school that I haven’t visited and since the schools I’m considering are on the east coast, I’m probably going to stick with RD.

I tried to do some digging to find the avg. test score but it doesn’t appear on the school profile (if I was looking at the right document) and if it did, I’m most likely above the average to some degree

Yes - struggle admission wise - because I think TO isn’t a great thing anymore, given the high percentages of submission. But - submitting a score well under the minimum 25th percent won’t help.

As an overall portfolio, you’re a fine student and will have many fine opportunities - but I think you are reaching high.

Of course, OP has CSU and UC - and I’m unable to chance them and hopefully some will come through.

Best of luck to OP - but given this list- if it’s LACs they like - they might add on top of a Wesleyan, a Dickinson or Gettysburg. Instead or inaddition to a Swat and Haverford, maybe an Ursinsus or Susquehanna or if they like the Swat/Hav/BM triumverate - maybe a Mt. Holyoke which can cross register with the other Amherst schools.

For a Upenn type, maybe a U Denver or College of Charleston, etc…if there were interest in some better chance schools to supplement or substitute with the current list.

Best of luck to OP.

Thank you! I had Wesleyan on my list but Dickinson/Gettysburg I didn’t know existed, looked them up and they seem great but out of my price range, unfortunately. Definitely reaching for my schools on the east coast, but its all or nothing to get me in the cold weather over there haha

As long as you are happy with your safety schools, and are confident of being accepted, you can apply wherever else you want to.

I would suggest not submitting your SAT score to any of those reach schools (that are test optional).

I see you have mostly larger colleges on your list…but you might want to consider Bates and Bowdoin.

From Bates:

Bates has been a national leader in the test-optional movement for nearly four decades. In October 1984, the faculty voted to make standardized testing, such as the SAT and the ACT, optional for all students applying to Bates.

From Bowdoin:

Because Bowdoin is test optional (and has been for more than 50 years!), test scores are hidden on your application that is submitted to us, but you can still view them in your Application Portal. If you choose to have your test scores considered for your application, they will be made available to the Admissions Committee during the review process.

Some schools won’t accept so many LORs, and in fact the vast majority prefers not to. I would submit VERY cautiously. An additional Art LOR could make sense given the ECs. Is OP pursuing art? Is a portfolio necessary/included?

As for the two teacher recs, it seems unadvisable to submit both from the same subject. Some colleges go as far as suggesting one STEM, one Humanities. I don’t think this distinction makes sense for everyone, but, at a minimum, I’d pick two different subjects.

Any experienced posters with thoughts on this?

Here’s what Cornell’s College of Human Ecology says about LORs:

Letters of recommendation | More is not better.

Letters of recommendation help the Admissions Committee understand your maturity, self-motivation, initiative, character, and role in the classroom and community.

  • Carefully consider who to ask and how that letter may support your candidacy.
  • Ask a science or math teacher to submit a letter on your behalf especially if you apply to one of our natural science-based majors.
  • Limit submissions to the number of letters required in the application instructions.
  • Use your best manners to request a letter of recommendation and to thank the letter writer afterwards. College of Human Ecology Undergraduate Application Tips | Cornell College of Human Ecology

Also for others reading this thread, Hum Ec is test optional but not one of the test blind colleges. It is also very much one of the fit schools at Cornell. Lots of great information on the link above.

Did you run the Net Price Calculator and were the results above the budget your parents gave you?

What is the budget?

Here’s all colleges that meet need. Look at a Franklin & Marshall, Denison, Kenyon, Occidental, Oberlin, Connecticut - maybe a “less competitive” meets need school…if you want East…in addition to your list.

Good luck.

If you need full tuition look at Berea.

Do you mean total cost of attendance…because even with a full tuition scholarship, room, board, personal expenses, etc…can easily add $20,000 additional to the costs.

Yes, sorry for any confusion.

Make sure - in next few days with a 12/1 deadline - that you apply fir the W&L Johnson. 10% of kids or about 44 - earn a full ride.

You want to give yourself better odds. I don’t tho k your list does - certainly not with submitting scores where they are low relative to others.

With a $40k income either the local Cal State or a CC may be best but if you are applying wide - apply with your best position. A 1400 is fine but not at the list of schools noted hence the need to TO.

Good luck
