Chance me? :D

Regular Decision: (I may be applying early decision to Columbia)

Ethnicity: Asian, Chinese - Parents are first generation from Shanghai

SAT I: 2310
breakdown:
Reading - 770
Writing - 800
Math - 740

PSAT: 234
breakdown:
Reading - 800
Writing - 800
Math - 740

SAT II:
Math IC - 750
Literature - 740

(will be taking 2 more, Math IIC and Biology, on the October testing date; will also be retaking Literature because the day I took it the first time was not a good one ;P )

GPA/Rank: my school doesn't rank and they don't usually calculate the GPA out of a 4.0 system, but it would be about about a 3.75 to a 3.8)

APs:
AP English Lit - 5
AP European History - 5
AP English Language - 5
AP Biology - 4

Extracurriculars:

Piano is my biggest thing. I know that yes, I'm Asian (and every Asian kid plays the piano well :P), and that probably won't help, but I've attended numerous festivals, institutes, and competitions, and I have fared pretty well on the national and international levels. I've won a few major competitions, lost a few. I will also be applying to a number of conservatories and music schools (Juilliard, Eastman, Manhattan School of Music, Peabody, Rice - Shepherd, Northwestern - Bienen, Cleveland Institute of Music, etc.) because this has been such a big aspect of my life, and I truly love it - Wellesley has a decent music department though and its proximity to NEC (New England Conservatory of Music) makes it fairly attractive. Will be sending in an arts supplement for all non-conservatory schools, hope it might help a little bit?

Cello - I make it into All-State every year and I'm in the Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra - both are by audition. Piano's my first instrument though, but I'll probably include a cello recording and a resume on an arts supplement as well.

Policy Debate - I used to be pretty competitive on the national circuit back in freshman and sophomore years, but I had to quit at the end of sophomore year. :(

Others:
Editor of the school newspaper, president of Music Service Club, volunteer at local library, SAT reading and writing tutoring business, piano accompanist and performer, officer of Young Democrats, co-president of religious and racial diversity club, Robotics (made it to nationals), Foreign Exchange Student in The Netherlands for a month (through the school - working on research on water politics and engineering)...

Thank you so much!! :)

Oh! And next year's classes will be (not terribly difficult of a load, but I'm also trying to focus on auditions and stuff ;P ):

AP Calc BC
AP US History
AP Music Theory
AP Physics C

Yeah, you have a great shot at Wellesley. Good academics, strong ECs, etc. Don’t screw up on your essays/application, and you should be all set fingers crossed

ED for Columbia will be difficult, as you’re pretty much a cookie cutter Asian applicant, though your research in the Netherlands (besides sounding super awesome!) may help set you apart from the masses. Good luck!

thank you so much! Haha I know Columbia’s going to be a bit tough because I am ridiculously stereotypically Asian and it sucks :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: …but I really love the school and I was thinking ED there might improve my chances, if only by a little bit. I’m a little concerned though - mostly because of my focus on music, I kind of do want to do a double-degree or at the very least, continue to pursue music at a reasonably high level if, in the end, I do not end up at a conservatory.

I like Wellesley a lot too! I adore Boston and I hear that the academics are absolutely terrific; I don’t mind the all-girls scene (I know plenty of guys in Boston anyway) and I think that that may be a way for me to really establish solid, lifelong friends! Thanks again :)

if anyone else wants to chance me too, I’d be really grateful! Thanks :)

SugarIncarnate,

I think you have a very good chance of getting in to Wellesley. Your scores (both SATs and APs), your gpa and your ECs are all solid. By the way, I concur with your idea of sending in your arts supplement. Good luck!

It is not so stereotypical to play at that level. You’ll be admitted for sure.
