I am applying ED to M&T only, but I am still considering ED or RD for engineering if I am deferred.
Unweighted GPA- 4.0
Weighted GPA- 4.65
IB full diploma candidate
ACT- 34 super- I took the October ACT with writing so I do not think that it will be sent before then.
Tennessee Governor’s School for Science and Engineering
Eagle Scout
Co-founder of school’s ultimate frisbee team
Summer internship with med device company
Trombone in band and state honors related with that
DECA state in accounting
Model UN and Youth in Government- state leadership position
Chess team, Mu Alpha Theta, etc.
AP Scores- 7 tests, all 3s and 4s
IB Scores- Will take 7 total
I know M&T is not guaranteed for anyone and it will likely come down to my essays, but would it be worth it to ED to engineering too if I get differed?
Also, what is some advice for how to be a stronger candidate for admissions overall? I have heard as general advice that I need to appear specialized instead of well rounded, but what does that mean for my application?
Your AP scores seem low compared to your GPA. What was your Eagle Scout Project? Can you tie it into your academic and EC interests? You can appear specialized if you can weave them together in essays.
I honestly don’t think you can get into M&T, but maybe engineering. M&T is super competitive and people who get in are admitted to both Wharton and SEAS. You need to have a good engineering and business profile to qualify for the program. Most people who get in already have startups or businesses and have done internships or research in STEM fields. I was considering applying for it ED, but I searched more about it and it is ridiculously competitive, and now I am only going to apply to SEAS ED. But still, if you have time to write the essays go for it. You will not lose anything since people who are rejected from M&T are evaluated for their alternative schools normally.
This is mainly because the lower scores were taken in IB classes instead of APs. I studied for the AP tests at the end of the year, but IB has far less carryover methods-wise than I thought it did; my ACT is pretty low too, I practice test much higher for some reason.
I still think that I am going to apply ED for M&T because I have time for the essays, but I likely will not apply to SEAS ED because I think GaT or Purdue’s engineering programs might be a better fit. I am also applying to Cal MET, but that’s also a far reach. I can probably tie my interests and experiences into a common theme and integrate them into my profile, but I still don’t expect anything.
@xyyez3 ok then I get the AP scores. I would not self report the AP scores on your common app then. Penn doesn’t accept all AP’s anyway, and definitely not 3’s or 4’s in most cases.
