Chance me ED I Fall 2014? Lost!

Hi, i'm new here so please let me know if I have any information missing.

SAT 1780
CR 600
M 590
W 590
Currently studying Math to hopefully bring that score up in October (goal is 630, probably going to get more like a 610 though)

GPA 3.35 UW
Unsure of class rank- at least top 25% if not 15% out of 91 students

Junior Yr Classes:
AP Bio: B avg (2 on the AP exam)
Honors Humanities with dual enrollment at local community college: B- avg
Spanish II: A avg
Economics: A+ avg
U.S. History: A avg
College-Prep Pre-Calc: A- avg

Senior Yr Classes:
AP Chem
AP Statistics
AP Calc AB
Research and Composition
Spanish III
(hoping to pull at least A-'s in all classes first quarter)

From small (400 students) high school in rural NH, I don't believe anyone from my high school has ever applied before (is this even relevant? haha)

Few EC's, mostly from junior/senior year because I was kind of an introvert in the beginning of high school
1.Paid work at Kendal at Hanover (retirement home) waitstaff in the dining room since April 2012
2.Student Council Treasurer of my class since senior year
3.NHS- I find out if I am accepted next week, hopefully I am! Looking forward to volunteer work
4.Volunteer club at HS since junior year- visited sick children in hospital, ran a 5k in support of said hospital, did a walk for suicide awareness, etc. Probably have a total of about 20 community service hours
5.manager of field hockey team since junior year- coach wrote an excellent EC
6.art club- president since junior year
7.LGR- let's get ready sat prep program (perfect attendance) spring of junior year
8.spanish club since sophomore year- took a trip to spain to stay with a spanish student in April 2013
9.varsity cross country freshman year
10.varsity track freshman year
11.Bio club since senior year, will be taking trips to the zoo and the bio dome in Montreal
(it would also be extremely helpful if you guys tell me if any of these are not worth mentioning. I don't want to sound like I joined all of these last minute to impress colleges. Honestly I joined them because I wasn't enjoying high school and I decided getting involved was the best thing to do. Also my paid work is a huge time commitment.)

Excellent EC's from Field hockey coach (also my US History and Economics teacher) and my Honors Humanities and Research and Composition teacher.
Another thing to mention is that i've had a different guidance counselor all 4 years of high school so i've had to do a lot of my own advising. My new guidance counselor plans on mentioning this.

I had to drop spanish II sophomore year because of extenuating circumstances but re-enrolled junior year. is this worth mentioning on the common-app?

Pretty decent interview, i'm not sure what constitutes a "stellar" interview but she sounded pleased and I answered each question fairly well.

I plan on writing a "why trinity" essay in addition to my common app essay. Haven't written my common app essay yet but will probably write it on either my trip to spain or my work experience.

medium to high financial need, my family's EFC is about $12k (income is about $112k but my sister is also in college (community college) and my family supports more than half of her finances). I have heard Trinity reaches for wealthier students, this is one of my main concerns...

Mom never attended college, my dad went to a 2year college in vt. My sister currently attends a community college in NH and lives at home. She is 26. No alumni/faculty connections.

I am also applying to Fordham, Boston U, St. Lawrence, U New Hampshire, U Hartford, Endicott College, and U Connecticut.

forgot to mention I plan on majoring in biology and also plan on contacting the head of the biology department about the genomics program and my interest in the college. Do the faculty normally tend to pass this info on to the admissions office?

You MUST apply ED I to have any chance of being accepted at Trinity. Over the past 2-3 years Trinity has regained academic momentum and acceptance rates are plummeting. Recommend private one on one tutoring for the SAT but realize that you might not be able to swing that. Also, I am very concerned about your grade of 2 on AP biology, do you have to report that score? You would have a shot ED I so best of luck to you in all of your plans because something very positive will work out for you.

More helpful than contacting the bio department would be the Field hockey coach recruiting you. Contact the coach asap!

I probably won’t report it just because it wouldn’t be worth it, but long story short we had a very questionable teacher for that class and she failed to prepare us. she was fired at the end of that year and the class in itself was very frustrating to try to learn in.

I won’t be doing any private tutoring mostly because I already participated in an SAT program in April-May, and we wouldn’t be able to afford it.

Do you know anything about financial need and how that may swing my application one way or the other?

@nervedoctor, I was only the manager for my field hockey team at my high school. Would recruiting still help? And my high school is a D3 team in the NCAA. I’ve heard that D3 doesn’t matter as much as D1.

If you are accepted ED at Trinity and cannot pay, they will release you from the ED agreement but it is a Major hassle. If finances are really important, you will get the best financial offers from schools that are a notch below your qualifications, essentially every school on your list other than Trinity. You sound like a really nice, earnest person. St. Lawrence might be a compromise as they academics are good and financial aid and merit aid are very generous. Not sure if you could be considered first in your family to attend college, but if so, that fact could help your chance of being accepted and receiving aid.

Agree that the manager usually doesn’t get recruited but it is worth speaking with the coach nonetheless. Trinity is a D III school so there are no sports scholarships but you would have a better chance of acceptance if you were on a coach’s list.

Trinity claims to meet full calculated need of every student so if accepted I would be able to pay. this is one of the factors that went into making trinity my top choice.

I actually loved St. Lawrence as well, i’m just not sure I would be able to handle the isolation. Ideally I would want to be in the city, having grown up in a backwoods rural area of NH.

And thank you for the advice. It helps a lot, considering those around me know not as much about the college process

I have gone through this process now twice recently with 2 sons, so I do know the small liberal arts schools in particular. You will have a good shot ED I for Trinity but it’s not a sure thing and you will likely not get in RD.
Feel free to PM me.

This is a tough call. Your scores are only in about the 25th percentile for Trinity, so you do have a shot, but I agree with nervedoctor that you must apply ed to maximize your chances. 69% of recently admitted students were in the top 10% of their high school class, so it would be much better if you were as close as possible to that (top 15%) than top 25%.

Your course rigor is not bad and you should be sure that your counselor says that you have taken the most challenging courses offered at your school, if in fact that is the case.

Do not under any circumstances report the AP Score of 2.

Do not offer up your SAT prep course as an extracurricular.

Taking trips to the zoo or Montreal as part of the Bio Club are not worth mentioning, either.

Focus on activities 1-6 together with your work in the Spanish club.

Here’s what’s tough. You would almost certainly be admitted to St Lawrence ED (89% ED admission rate.) Trinity is more of a reach but not impossible. But interestingly enough, St Lawrence has a rolling Early Decision process where you can apply ED anytime thru Feb. 1. So you can go for ED1 at Trinity and if it doesn’t work out, you can still apply ED to St Lawrence. If you really liked St Lawrence, I would proceed this way because St Lawrence RD is much more difficult than ED.

Hi folks,
I’m an international applicant willing to apply to Trinity college in ED-2 round. Someone told me that my chances are significantly less when compared with ED-1 applicants. Is it true?

@trekslxchick, would you consider Trinity for me as an ideal reach or am I aiming too high? Also, do you recommend I only mention activities 1-6 on my common app or do you mean for me to mention all of them (except SAT prep) with emphasis on 1-6? And one more thing about course rigor. I was forced to choose between AP English Lit&Comp and AP Statistics and for this reason I am taking a lower-level english class senior year (We don’t have many courses to offer at my hs). Is this worth mentioning in the additional information section/in my recommendation from my guidance counselor?

Trinity is not an “ideal reach” for you but it is not impossible either, and you MUST apply ED to have a shot. That’s why this is such a tough call. Your Achilles heel are your test scores. I see you are retaking SATS on this weekend, that is great news, as Trinity superscores (as I’m sure you know.) Any improvement here will really help.

I think a Trinity ED1, ST Lawrence ED2 strategy is reasonable. UNH is your safety if it gets as far as RD. (You might want to take a look at University of Vermont early action, too. You can do this and also do ED1/ ED2 elsewhere.) It would be nice to have that UVM acceptance in your pocket (and I think you will get one) if it all goes awry.

Yes, have your counselor state that you were not able to take AP English this year due to a scheduling conflict with AP Statistics, and that given the scheduling constraints of your high school, you have taken the most rigorous courseload available to you.

You can mention all your activities (except SAT prep) in the activity listing on the common app, just don’t get into the trips to the zoo, etc. Focus on 1-6.

I’ll PM you 1 other suggestion too.

Good luck.

@trekclxchick Please help me too. Applying ED-2 will put me at a disadvantage when compared with some-one who is applying ED-1?

SirJadeja - we would need to know more about your stats to consider your chances and strategies. But yes, in general, ED1 has better odds than ED2, which has better odds than RD. I haven’t tried to determine exact stats for Trinity but that can usually be done with some determined googling.

Being troubled by the same inquiry. :(

So I brought them up and I now have a (superscored):
1870
CR 630
M 650
W 590

Do you think that increases my chances at all?

Every bit of increase in scores help. Frustrating part is that 2000 would be much better than 1870. Do apply EDI and let us know! Best wishes!!

Yes, this is better and certainly does increase your chances! Good luck to you.
