I come from an underachieving public high school surrounded by rich, successful high schools.
Thank you so much for any feedback you can give me!
I am a Tufts parent of a rising sophomore who is an ED admit, also a white female, no hooks. Her stats and scores were quite similar to yours, so you definitely have a shot!! Your course load for senior year looks really strong. FA is a factor in ED. You definitely want to visit while school is in session, tour, sit in on a class and demonstrate interest. If there are Tufts related events at your school, definitely attend. We didn’t do this because her high school had chances to meet with Tufts admissions, but you could email the Admissions office and see if there are plans for Tufts Admissions people to visit your school, or other schools, or if an event is planned nearby that you could attend. Other posters may be able to provide an opinion on the weight given to being a star student at an under performing school, especially if you come from an underrepresented state. Her school guidance counselor felt very positively about our D’s chances at Tufts ED, even though it was still considered a reach (and she was prepared for rejection). Make sure your essays are strong and singular. There is no question that ED helps your chances, you just need to be sure that’s where you want to be.
You are certainly competitive, but your math score is weak.
Have you taken calculus? Physics?
Is your curriculum well-rounded between humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and math, or have you gone light on the latter two?
I’m 1/4 French, 1/2 Ashkenazi Jewish, and 1/4 Colombian, making me between 1/4 and 1/16 Native Latin American. I was born here, but my first language was French, I live in a Jewish town but wasn’t raised with it, and I go to Colombia every summer. I have also had cancer and depression and PTSD as a child, so that’s unique.
My GPA is a 3.75 and my school is ranked 482nd in the US and 22nd in my state (public). I’ve never gotten a grade lower than a B (I’m really evenly split).
I haven’t taken any AP classes since my councelor couldn’t fit them, but senior year I’m going to do AP Spanish, Stats, and Physics I&II. I have been enrolled in all honors classes except for Spanish (Advanced track), and I took standard precalc Junior year, anticipating more APs.
I’m in an alternative program which emphasizes democracy, freedom, and responsibility. It runs by the motto “Don’t let school get in the way of your education” which takes the logic that learning should be about passion not achievement. We have mixed age classes, and it has a polarized reputation. On one hand, there are a lot of hippies and slackers, on the other hand we have a lot of socially-aware activists. Five out of 30 seniors got into IVYs, two of them to Harvard… I don’t know what that means
My highest ACT score is a 26 (I know, I’m gonna boost it or else I have no shot). Do you think I could get in if I get my score to at least a 32? Also, I want to major in Statistics. Should I announce it, or should I withhold it because I took one standard math class?
Throughout high school i have taken:
Honors Biology
Honors Chemistry
Honors Physics
Geometry
Honors Algebra 2
Honors Pre-Calculus
and currently i am taking AP Statistics
The only problem I would see is that your senior schedule is very unbalanced. Most colleges, especially Tufts which has a very liberal-artsy curriculum where students are expected to take at least two courses in each discipline each year, want a balanced schedule with one class from each core discipline. I would have swapped a hard science for either politics or history and taken calculus rather than statistics.
