Chance me for 2014 please!

Rank: 5/ 550 people (Very Competitive)
GPA: 4.7 (out of 4 due to weighting)
Class load: hardest possible no doubt!
ACT: 29 ( I know, I know. This is my WEAKEST point. I am seriously working my butt off this summer. I am studying daily, have resorted to help from a tutor, and hope to raise this score to at least a 31-32 by Sept.)

ECs:

Editor-in-chief of School Paper - first junior to become one in a long time, I am absolutely certain that the newspaper advisor will write me a first class recommendation. I am also the first EIC to serve for two years in a row!

Question: Our school paper won a national award from Columbia University (silver crown) during my time this year as EIC, is something I should mention? This award is not directed to me specifically but more to our entire paper. I think it's appealing as it is an award recognizing the top few papers internationally and is from Columbia itself.

Founder and manager of newspaper website

Awarded Outstanding web-designer by IU

Write for other community papers as well, including our cultural one.

Many essay competition awards; won 1st place in state for a newspaper article I wrote. That same article won 4th place nationally at another competition (which I will not list here for security reasons as you can easily look me up)

Started "desktop publishing" company - create flyers for local organizations, private groups, freelance editing, video/slideshow editing, creator, freelance writer, press release writer, t-shirt design services, etc.

History Fair 3rd Place in State/Metro scholarship Winner/ National Qualifier (Alternate)

History Fair Executive Director's award for Superior History

Internship at congressman office summer before junior year

Attended Illini Girls State

Founder/President of an Indian community service council for students (we help out at various community festivals, represent the youth, currently planning a cultural show and a trip abroad to India)
***Currently collaborating to make this an "international student" effort meaning students of all cultures create a joint effort.

State Cultural Pageant winner (first runner up) and miss talent

500+ volunteer service hours through hospital volunteering (the usual lol), tutoring, after school enrichment program helping for younger children, etc. etc.

Math Honor Society President

Founder and manager of MHS website (to submit service hours, updates on events, etc)

National Honor Society

French Honor Society

DECA state winner

I have several other ECs but I feel that these are my main ones and the ones that I am most proud to be involved in! However, as you can see my goal was to essentially divide my interests in three areas: writing/publishing, Politics/History, Indian Culture. Then of course, this is all accompanied by the usual honor societies and community service.

While I am certain I can increase my ACT score by September as I have this asmy biggest commitment for the summer, I would like you to evaluate my chances for this fall!

Recommendations – My counselor especially told me I am her “top junior” and will receive a “stellar” recommendation, and I am certain that the same will apply to my Newspaper Advisor/English teacher who has seen megrow extensively since freshman year. Also, would it be advisable to receive some sort of letter confirming the legitimacy of my internship at the Congressman’s office? I don’t want to give off any sort of impression that it was received through connections and whatnot since it most certainly was not!

Thanks for your advice!

I stopped reading after you said you were ranked 5th in your class. Why haven’t you killed your 4 competitors yet in duels? Do you want to go to anything but a community college? Only by doing this can you show your true dedication to Vanderbilt. Until then I wouldn’t even THINK of applying so as to not waste the precious, precious time of the Vanderbilt admissions office.
But ya, what were you asking about again?

haha thanks for your reply. Quite unfortunately I was unable to beat those four competitors up until jr year…however, senior year may change things up a bit

(hopefully for the better)

no, murder if defiantly the best way. Hard Work is for losers (no offense to your screen name). How many people do you think Bill Gates has killed? trillions, trillions upon trillions.

LOL. do you go to vanderbilt?

yup. freshman this coming year. funny how the world works sometimes. What were we talking about? something about Murder or was is it grades. Oh ya, ACTs. Murder the ACTs as well.

Nice! Congrats on your acceptance! and boy do i wish i i could murder those ACTS…ughhhhh. stupid stupid standardized tests!

Do you have any advice on how I should improve my app since you’ve also very recently experienced the application process.

Give the SAT a shot. Because unless you’re a minority, a 29 probably will keep you out.

I am not a fan of the SAT especially since I’ve been focusing my studying on the ACT most of this summer. I hope to improve, but does a 29 really seals the rejection at vanderbilt?

And no, I am not a minority so I guess that doesn’t help me much. In fact. I’m Asian (india).

no. No one thing will keep you in or out of Vandy. Just be well rounded and keep your dueling pistols well polished.

This year, the middle 50% ACT stats were 31-35. Of the quarter of admits who got below a 31, a great deal had signifigant hooks. Not too many people got in with a 29 and no hooks.

I see. well im still going to apply, i guess there really is no harm in doing so. Thanks vandy.

Hardworker-
I have to disagree with the above posters. I was a lot like you when I applied… standardized tests were never really my thing. But I made up for it in other ways, standing out in “leadership” activities and such. I got in, and became a Chancellor’s Scholar with a full scholarship. Vanderbilt is a fantastic school, and you should apply anyways. Work for but don’t fret about your test scores. Try the SAT and work for good AP scores. Mostly, though, try to be exceptional at something. Do something that not every Vandy student will have (trust me, there will be many Valedictorians, NHS members, and newspaper editors at Vandy.) Whether you get in or not, I am sure a school will be lucky to have you.

Oh, and as answer to your question, absolutely mention the newspaper award. It is a reflection of your leadership :)

Thanks Jswift that is very encouraging!

Try the sat. you dont have to report the act (if you dont get it up). REally emphasize the wide range of ec.s and awards that youve done/earned, including you pageant accomplishment, because it makes you appear more well-rounded - which vanderbilt loves! On your app, consider focusing attention on the intercultural work that you’ve done.
blessings! and congrats on you awesome gpa lol. wayy better than mine was…

I would say at this point, everything is great, except the ACT, that would be grounds enough for not accepting you or even waitlisting you, pull that up and you’ll be golden.

how many times have you taken the ACT?

I’ve taken it twice and will be taking it in Sept. again.

I heard at Vanderbilt being Asian is a good thingy since they are trying to increase their diversity at the school? Is this true?
