Stats:
UW GPA : 3.82
W GPA: 4.33
PSAT: 1470/1520
SAT w/Essay: 1530/1600
My GPA is a tad low. I also got some b’s in calc and pre-calc, but there is a strong upward trend as I got all A’s in the second semester of Junior Year, A’s in both AP Physics C, E+M and multivariable calculus.
EC’s:
UCB Lab of Nano-Engineering Research Internship:
Converted the entirety of their MatLab Repository to Python to improve certain functions like voxelization and radon transformations + working on a paper with the professor running the lab
Center for Advanced Study Research Internship:
I analyzed data released from CalTech and NASA regarding planetary zones and habitable regions/areas similar in environment to Earth.
ASDRP Research Internship:
Analyzing data and research to understand phenomena at the quantum level and applying quantum computing to small molecules and single-atom perturbations.
ShelterTech:
Volunteering with a San-Fransisco based nonprofit organization looking to develop a directory for the homeless to gather resources and shelter etc. Helping with data analysis + web design + backend Git Processes
Math counts:
Volunteering to teach a group of middle school students competitive math. Taught advanced concepts, organized curriculum, directed students etc.
Speech/Debate:
Multiple Awards in novice and varsity division.
Model United Nations:
Multiple Awards in 10+ committees at conferences.
Dude that is so cool! Sorry I’m only a rising senior so I’m not extremely qualified to chance you but you seem amazing. Obviously top schools will always be a reach, but you seem qualified to have a chance for sure. You should send a portfolio of some of these projects you’ve done? Send the colleges your research? I wish you luck!!!
State of residency? That will be important for UMichigan and GTech.
Why UPenn? It’s not really all that strong for Engineering, compared to a long list of public and private schools, like Purdue, UIUC, Washington, UCSD, USC, and others.
What can you afford?
Your GPA is lowish but solid.
You are competitive, but all of these colleges are reaches or high reaches. What worries me a bit is the fact that you were struggling with pre-calc and calc, though doing well in multivariate calculus does indicate that you can deal with the math requirements for engineering. In general, your GPA is that weird place in which it is high enough to be competitive for the most selective colleges, but is slightly below the rest.
Remove UPenn unless you are a legacy, replace Berkeley with Purdue if you are serious about aerospace engineering, and add some matches and a safety.
Assuming CA since OP mentioned San Francisco internships. You’re in a tough demographic but I do think you have a pretty good chance at the public colleges on your list. Applying RD to Penn or CMU usually means lower acceptance rate than what’s published. Mwolf’s suggestion of Purdue is a good one. Also it’s a little unusual for stem to have speech and debate and MUN, so prioritize your ECs where you made the biggest impact. good luck!
