Before I get wide-net comments, please know that I am also applying to day schools (A substantial amount of them), and these three schools were the ones I chose to apply to.
I am in the 8th grade (applying for 9th) and applying to Phillips Academy, Phillips Exeter Academy, and Choate Rosemary Hall. I live in New York and go to a private school there (up to 8th grade, so everyone is applying this year.) I have an admissions counselor, but unfortunately, I haven’t been able to get any answers as to what kind of chances I have.
Additionally, I would say that my school is competitive. My peers have very good test scores (Grade ISEE/SSAT average probably around 90-92) and are accomplished. Knowing that there are limited spots to very popular schools worries me. (P.S. - sorry for rambling!)
Info abt me:
8th grade - ORM (Asian male)
ISEE Test:
Vocab - 8 (95%)
QR - 9 (99%)
RC - 9 (99%)
MA - 8 (93%)
Interviews: Went well, Andover/Exeter were typical good interviews, I answered all their questions honestly. Choate went even better; the interviewer (Asos. Director of Admis.) was very nice and she told my parents and I that she would be happy to advocate for me.
Essays: Good, I believe creative writing is one of my strengths, and while they may not be prize-winning, they show who I am and give the schools a sense of my writing style.
Recs: To be honest, I have no idea (School doesn’t show families), but I have great relations with my Humanities teacher, and good relations with my Math teacher. I have no idea about what my counselor thinks, as we haven’t shared any ‘personal’ moments, per se.
EC’s: I believe that EC’s is my strong suit, and am relying on them to be unique from other applicants.
Chess - Youth Chess National Team, Top 10 result at National Tournaments multiple times (Playing since Kindergarden)
Baseball - Travel/Select Team 6yrs (Have been playing for 8)
Tri-Varsity Athlete (Soccer, Basketball, Track)
That’s about it! I am very sorry for the long post, and hope everyone has a good winter break (It’s coming!)
At the end of the day, it’s about learning more about yourself, improving academically, and enjoying the process. Thank you for reading!
