Chance me for Bates, please?

Hi everyone! I’m highly interested in Bates College. (One of my top three), but my situation is kinda…unique. I’m planning to schedule an off-campus interview in January.

Here are my stats. Would the Bates Community be so kind as to chance me? :)

I am a 20 year old Bi-Racial (Black and Hispanic) male from Georgia (US State). When I graduate next May, I will have taken six years to complete high school. I haven’t failed any classes, but I was sick for about 7 months, and there were some MAJOR family issues that I went through. These are the reasons why I have taken so long to graduate.

GPA: 3.95 (Top 10%)

5 classes of Math (Only up to Algebra 2…My school doesn’t offer any higher. :()

5 classes of Social Science

3 classes of Science (Biology, Earth Science, Chemistry)

2 classes of Foreign Language

4 classes of English

I attend American School of Correspondence; a correspondence school in Lansing, Illinois, but I actually reside in Georgia. They’re accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, they will send a Transcript, teacher recs, and a Guidance Counselor’s letter. American School doesn’t offer APs, IBs, or Honors, but I have taken just about the most challenging curriculum my school offers. Also, I’ve already spoken to admissions counselors at Bates and I’ve been told that I wouldn’t apply as a home schooler or need to send the home school supplement.

Anyway…

SAT: Wasn’t planning to submit.

Work Experience:

I run errands with my mom throughout the week. It may not sound like much but it really does help my family, it’s time consuming, and it’s my current job. =/ -10 hours per week.

Automotive Mechanic Assistant:

I work with my dad on cars. We’ve done jobs as simple as tune-ups and brakes to jobs as complex as replacing engines and transmissions.- 2 hours per week.

Computer Mechanic:

This doesn’t happen often, but if there is a problem with one of our computers, I fix them. Also, the two computers that are in my house were assembled my me. We bought old broken computers from computer stores and the Goodwill. I then would diagnose what was wrong with them, buy the needed part/parts. Replace them, and just like that, we have two working computers that cots less than $100. :)

Self-Employed:

Since I was about 12, I’ve had my own business. I buy video games and gaming cards (Geeky, I know.), then sell them. I haven’t made much money, but the little I do make certainly does help…

**Sports:

NOTE: Remember, I attend a school of correspondence, so my sports and extra-curricular activities will be almost entirely community-based.**

Captain of community Basketball team. (I’ve been playing since I was about 13.)

Co-Captain of community football team. (Same as above.)

Extra-Curricular Activities: (See note under “Sports”.)

Founder of a Rosary prayer group. We meet daily to pray the rosary. We sometimes discuss religion.

Co-founder of a community beautifying group: We pick up trash throughout the neighborhood in which I live. We also sometimes cut grass in areas the county government doesn’t get.

Founder of a Politics group: We usually meet weekly to discuss and debate politics. (It’s been incredibly civil, much to my surprise.:))

Community Service:

Participated in a Rivers Alive clean-up. (Oct. 2010.) Spent a Saturday picking up trash on the river shore and the surrounding area.

Currently working on organizing a raffle to raise funds for the local Battered Women’s house. Looks like quite a significant amount will be raised.

I believe that’s it…So, what does the Bates community think? Will I be accepted or not? I’m planning on majoring in Political Science/Politics (Their site uses both terms.) or History.

Thanks for taking your time to read my painfully long post! :D

EDIT: Darn, I missed the 20 minute window…>_<

Basketball position I play: Point Guard/Small Forward.

Football position I play: Quarterback/Wide receiver. Also I’m Captain, not Co-Captain as I wrote above, of my football team. (Not sure if this matters, but still…)

Anyone??? :(

ur hearing this from a deferred guy, but i think u have a good shot…i dont know what ur issues were in graduating late…go ahead bro!
similar thing, we dont have aps /ibs/hons as well n i took the most rigorous course…
bytheway, i didnt submit my act either, so , what i’d suggest is that if ur sat ranges somwhere in bates 50% percentile or near, u should submit it-might help u know or thats what i believe coz i think i got deferred due to it…
one main thing:write a fabulous essay…they love it!

Hmmm, I think it is a possibility. What does top 10% of this correspondance school actually mean? Bates will want some way to tell if you can do the work without any good objective criteria, especially with the very minimal math you’ve taken. You sound interesting, and they love community service-oriented people.
I think you should also look at some slightly less selective public service oriented schools: Juniata in Pennsylvannia, MacAlaster and St Olaf in MN. You will get points anywhere as a diversity candidate.

Prasadian: Sorry to hear that you were deferred… :frowning:

Thanks for the post and good luck!

OldbatesieDoc: Is there anything else I could do boost my chance of acceptance? By showing my interest in Bates, I mean.

Bates likes somewhat outdoorsy kids, who are very socially flexible, likely to get engaged in campus life (clubs, activities, and the social life.) It is academicaly challenging, which certainly includes poli sci/history. They will want evidence you can tackle a rigorous curriculum (and that you would enter well-prepared.) In the absence of stadardized scores, the look closely at classes, grades, recommendations. The school has a very large committment to community service or community engagement. It helps to be able to show you’ve been involved in some long term efforts, not the occasional things.
Look at their web bit about writing coll app essays.
