Chance me for Bowdoin, please?

Hi everyone! I’m highly interested in Bowdoin College. (One of my top three), but my situation is kinda…unique. Here are my stats. Would the Bowdoin Community be so kind as to chance me? :)

I am a 20 year old Bi-Racial (Black and Hispanic) male from Georgia (US State). When I graduate next May, I will have taken six years to complete high school. I haven’t failed any classes, but I was sick for about 7 months, and there were some MAJOR family issues that I went through. These are the reasons why I have taken so long to graduate.

GPA: 3.95 (Top 10%)

5 classes of Math (Only up to Algebra 2…My school doesn’t offer any higher. :()

5 classes of Social Science

3 classes of Science (Biology, Earth Science, Chemistry)

2 classes of Foreign Language

4 classes of English

I attend American School of Correspondence; a correspondence school in Lansing, Illinois, but I actually reside in Georgia. They’re accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, they will send a Transcript, teacher recs, and a Guidance Counselor’s letter. American School doesn’t offer APs, IBs, or Honors, but I have taken just about the most challenging curriculum my school offers. Also, I’ve already spoken to admissions counselors at Bates and I’ve been told that I wouldn’t apply as a home schooler or need to send the home school supplement.

Anyway…

SAT: Wasn’t planning to submit.

Work Experience:

I run errands with my mom throughout the week. It may not sound like much but it really does help my family, it’s time consuming, and it’s my current job. =/ -10 hours per week.

Automotive Mechanic Assistant:

I work with my dad on cars. We’ve done jobs as simple as tune-ups and brakes to jobs as complex as replacing engines and transmissions.- 2 hours per week.

Computer Mechanic:

This doesn’t happen often, but if there is a problem with one of our computers, I fix them. Also, the two computers that are in my house were assembled my me. We bought old broken computers from computer stores and the Goodwill. I then would diagnose what was wrong with them, buy the needed part/parts. Replace them, and just like that, we have two working computers that cots less than $100. :)

Self-Employed:

Since I was about 12, I’ve had my own business. I buy video games and gaming cards (Geeky, I know.), then sell them. I haven’t made much money, but the little I do make certainly does help…

**Sports:

NOTE: Remember, I attend a school of correspondence, so my sports and extra-curricular activities will be almost entirely community-based.**

Captain of community Basketball team. Point Guard/Power Forward. (I’ve been playing since I was about 13.)

Captain of community football team. Quarterback/ Wide Receiver (Same as above.)

Extra-Curricular Activities: (See note under “Sports”.)

Founder of a Rosary prayer group. We meet daily to pray the rosary. We sometimes discuss religion.

Co-founder of a community beautifying group: We pick up trash throughout the neighborhood in which I live. We also sometimes cut grass in areas the county government doesn’t get.

Founder of a Politics group: We usually meet weekly to discuss and debate politics. (It’s been incredibly civil, much to my surprise.:))

Community Service:

Participated in a Rivers Alive clean-up. (Oct. 2010.) Spent a Saturday picking up trash on the river shore and the surrounding area.

Currently working on organizing a raffle to raise funds for the local Battered Women’s house. Looks like quite a significant amount will be raised.

I believe that’s it…So, what does the Bowdoin community think? Will I be accepted or not? I’m planning on majoring in Government and Legal Studies or History.

Thanks for taking your time to read my painfully long post! :D

“Also, I’ve already spoken to admissions counselors at Bates* and I’ve been told that I wouldn’t apply as a home schooler or need to send the home school supplement.”

*Bowdoin

Sorry, but I am looking at both! :o

Anyone??? :(

i have no idea about ‘chances’ but what have you got to loose? apply with passion and confidence that you can add to the bowdoin community. interview with alumni and visit the campus, if you can.

good luck, liberalis, and keep your head up!

Bowdoin, as well as Bates, may be a reach for you. However, if you really show that you are REALLY passionate about them and put emphasis on your family situation, I think you may have a shot. I think that since your course schedule does not look too rigorous to them, but since anything more advanced wasn’t offered, I am sure they will look at that. Be sure to interview when ever possible, because this will show your interest. Being URM will also give you a slight advantage.

morandi and TheRealBoat: Thanks for the replies!

Anyone else???

Have you visited Maine? I’m wondering just what makes you choose Bowdoin. Bates is much easier to get into than Bowdoin, though both are great schools accepting a higher caliber student. Colby is of course the third Maine school that falls into this category. All three are in small working class cities.

Your background is a real mixed bag, so I think it’s difficult for people to “chance” you.

[Standardized Testing Policy (Bowdoin Admissions)](http://www.bowdoin.edu/admissions/apply/testing/)
check out that link. it says that students applying as home schoolers need to submit test scores. look into that.
