Chance me for Berkeley?

Hellooooo. I'm hoping to transfer from San Francisco State. I've heard it's next to impossible to transfer from a 4-year. Is that true? Anyway, here are my stats:

MAJOR: English
SFSU GPA: 3.93
ALL COLLEGE GPA (I took 2 classes at a comm. college): 3.68
EC's: Dean's List both semesters last year, member of Conduct Review Board, volunteer work over the summer, etc.

I got A's in all my classes last year and I should get all A's this semester. I'm taking all upper-division classes this semester: will they take this into account?

A professor from a summer math class at a CC gave me an F in his class, and I plan to retake it, but will this kill my chances? I explained all this in my app. It's also not even a math class that I need. But anyway, that's why my all-college GPA is so poor.

I'd loooooove to go to Berkeley. Do you think I'll get in? Thanks!

Hey kavanagh,

Berkeley’s a fresh choice–and a good one, too. Berkeley will take into account your upper division courses; however, your sub-par grade(s) may affect admission. Have you considered pursuing an “academic” renewal option to clear out your community college GPA? Just a thought.

To be frank, the odds are against you, as you are applying from a state school. BUT, apply anyway! The essay component is weighed heavily, so if you have a strong, compelling reason why you’re drawn to Cal, then you’ll have a competitive advantage.

Sometimes I wish I never turned down Haas. Best of luck!

Thanks for your advice. Yeah, I’m going to do academic renewal, but I have to wait until the summer (because I have to wait a year to be able to do it.) But it’s only one bad grade out of a bunch, so hopefully it won’t affect me too badly? I don’t know :/
