Chance me for Cornell Engineering 2017? :)

Hey everyone, I love Cornell and everything it represents! I plan on majoring in mechanical or biomedical engineering. (still have to decide) And also going on to cornell's grad school for an MBA. I am Caucasian, and have lived in NJ my whole life.

Colleges I'll apply to:
1)Cornell <3
2)University of Michigan
3)Purdue
4) Northwestern University
5) Boston College
6) Rutgers (back-up) I'm from New Jersey so it's a staple of every application list here.

GPA: Sorry guys I don't know what it is on a scale! But my unweighted average grade is probably somewhere around a 95-96 with a weighted average grade at 101.2 and that is continuing to go up. (Hoping to get an average grade of 102 by the end of this year)

SAT's: First time: 770 (Math) Grr omitted one, 590 (CR), 600 (Writing) Will be retaking, hoping to increase CR by 50 and writing by 100. Bio M (670) took it freshman year. Will be taking II's for Math I, II, and maybe physics. I am looking for 720+scores on all.

EC's: --Made Junior Olympics swimming freshman year.
--Varsity swimming 3 years, also attended Meet of Champions soph year (w/ a school record)
--Varsity Tennis 3 years (Made it to quarterfinals last year for county tourney, hoping to get first this year!)
--FBLA local officer (Parliamentarian) , also for FBLA placed 2nd in regionals for accounting II, attended last year's national leadership conference. This year got 2nd in business plan for the state, and am attending this year's conference in San Antonio. (Looking for top 10 in the nation). Also attended 3 national fall leadership conferences and 3 state leadership conferences.
--Helped to organize 2 charity events that raised over 5000$ through FBLA.
--Probably going to join Physics League next year and/or Key Club.
--Lifeguard in the summer.

Courses: Fresh- All academic honors, with electives.
Soph- All academic honors, with electives.
Junior 4 honors (1 that nets college credits for Economics) and APUSH (I know kind of weak)
Senior: Will be taking hon english, AP physics, AP Calc BC (2 period class), AP Stats, have to take an art class (grr..graduation requirement :( ) and gym of course lol.

Will be getting awesome recommendations by teachers and counselors.

Your chances and advice would be extremely helpful!

If you get your scores to the 2200s range you have a okay shot at regular, good shot at early. Also, definitely make sure you are top 10% of your class (it’s like a minimum) - top 5% to be safe

Colene actually goes to Cornell (I think, right? correct me if I’m wrong) so I’d definitely follow her advice! fellow Cornell 2017 applicant  but not for engineering, haha

Thanks Colene! One question: Does Cornell have a requirement for SAT II’s? And, I’m definitely in the top 5 students out of a 550 person class.

Good luck bluenotebook! I hope to see you in 2014  haha

Top 5? Even better. Keep up the good work! And yes check out the individual college requirements (for you this is the college of engineering). There is no BME undergrad major in cornell by the way, and really not that many schools even have that as an undergrad major. It’s one of those “niche” majors - Cornell has business undergrad, which is also pretty rare.

Thank you so much Colene for the insight and advice. You have been very helpful! And ahh interesting, I was leaning towards mechanical anyway.

We do have a BME minor though if that’s what you’re interested in. We have a LOT of top notch programs - that’s what we’re here for.

You need 1 math (math I or math II) and 1 science (any) SAT II subject test. Not too much emphasis is placed on them so as long as you get 700+, ideally a solid 700, you will be fine there.

You should get your SAT up to at least ~1450+ (Cornell does not look at writing). Even with your rank/gpa, a 1360 is low, especially for the College of engineering.

question: are you a female? That is a hook for applying to the college of engineering.

Need to improve the CR score on the SAT I to at least a 650 and ideally a 700+

Take Math II (not Math I) and Physics SAT IIs

Your ECs seem solid but nothing special for CoE…I would reccomend trying out a couple STEM ECs (physics/math club, science bowl or olympiad, FIRST robotics, etc.).

Your essays should display passion for engineering and perhaps specific ambitions within the field of engineering…that’s all I got.

Was looking at your college lust. I did not think Boston College had engineering.

“Your ECs seem solid but nothing special for CoE…I would reccomend trying out a couple STEM ECs (physics/math club, science bowl or olympiad, FIRST robotics, etc.).”
If anything that makes you stand out even less. While your scores should be good, your ecs should be what you want them to be - conformity is one of the worst things for admissions to see in ECs. Do something artsy, win some non-science competitions.

You qualified for Junior Olympics???
Doesn’t it count as a great EC?? You can always try to get recruited…
