Chance me for Duke Early Decision please!!!!

Duke is by far my favorite school, I have spoken to alumni, visited, spoken with admissions and I am in love with it. I have low enough income that if I’m accepted ED I assume I will be mostly taken care of, the rest i don’t mind, I just really really really want to go there, nowhere else.

General Comments: I am considering using my ED app for quest bridge if I’m a finalist but Duke isn’t a school and I love Duke so much that I might even turn down quest bridge if I’m a finalist just to apply. It’s always been my dream school, and with ED chances go from ~10% to about 24%

my school is known specifically for its greek, math, and philosophy intensive curriculum, and many students want to be engineers. We have had 7/7 duke applicants be accepted (but all with 3.9 GPA’s). I will probably apply as a Neuroscience/Bio/Anthro major, not sure yet but surely not engineering, definitely pre med.

Thank you for your input!!!

I’m not a Duke expert, but I think you’re in relatively decent shape (with one caveat), given that with a school like Duke nothing is ever a given. But as a low-income, 1st generation college URM with your background, I think you will be a strong ED applicant toTrinity.

Duke looks at 6 factors: GPA, test scores, curricular rigor, ECs, essays and recommendations. Your curricular rigor is fine. Your test scores are fine, with an ACT of 35 and 2 SAT II’s of 800. Your UW GPA and class rank are a tad low, but not ridiculously so, and will be offset by your test scores, curricular rigor, and hooks.

What are your ECs? You don’t list any. I understand that you worked and volunteered and did an internship, but surely you have some outside activities? These are important. I am assuming that they are just missing, otherwise I would have to downgrade your chances significantly.

Other than Duke having always been your dream school, what is it that you love about it? Think about that for your supplemental essays and probable interview. A neuroscience + cultural anthropology major would be pretty cool, and that might be one place to start.

Thanks so much @renaissancedad, I forgot to list that I have played soccer at school for 2 years and basketball my entire life (captain of high school team), I also do science competitions and dedicate a lot of my time to service clubs. I know nothing can be an exact predictor of my chances, but I guess its normal for me to stress about it… Its the only place I think I’d be 100% happy. Also, I visited recently and have a lot to talk about in my essays. Thanks again!

I’m a Duke alum. You are in good shape to apply ED. Take a look at the Robertsons scholars

@sgopal2, I believe that for consideration for Robertson Scholars you actually have to fill out an online application. This is in contrast to some of Duke’s other merit scholarship, for which qualified applicants are automatically considered.

I think you have a decent shot. Your grades are an issue but you have a lot of things going for you that should offset them. Interesting research work. I think studying gene defects in methylation pathways will be big someday.

Thank you!

I applied ED and to Robertson Scholars as well (I wouldn’t have applied to the Robertson if I hadn’t been suggested to through here).

Good luck!

@renaissancedad @Falcon1 @sgopal2 I got in!!!

Conguratulations!!!

Congratulations! Well deserved. I’m so happy for you.

Nice work. Now onto Robertson! Keep us posted

thanks !!!
