I also do some other things not school related: piano, Chinese classes at a local technical college (even though I'm not Chinese), just some fun stuff to keep me occupied

Work Experience:

I work at my parent’s restaurant. Technically I’m not a paid employee but this is a huge time commitment for me. 15 hours a week during the school year and 20+ during the summer. I double as a floor manager (directing servers, organizing reservations, etc.) and as a grunt worker (cash register, drinks, cleaning tables). I’ve basically done every job in a restaurant besides being a cook haha. My parents also just bought a bar during the summer so now I have to run this restaurant by myself basically until they can get the bar up and running (Dad needs to learn sake, cognacs, how to run a bar; Mom needs to get the books ready for a new business)

Volunteer Experience: This is where it hurts. I only have about 75 hours for the past 3 years of high school. Most of it is menial therefore I won’t list them. I did give up my spring break freshman year for a “Civic Education Project” through Northwestern. Only ranked up about 10 hours there though

Awards/ Other:

Piano Awards: State WMTA Qualifier for my level since 5th grade except for Junior year...I totally blanked on my Classical piece and only played about half of it before I couldn't remember anymore of it

Badger Boy State Attendee: American Legion sponsored camp. Only 4 people from class went and all positions were invite only.

2 different Debate Institutes during the summer:

Northwestern 2009: 3 weeks

Gonzaga 2010: 2.5 weeks

Debate Awards:

2008: Novice year I demolished nearly everybody. Me and my partner racked up at least 8 tournament wins and the ones we didn’t win we were either finalists or semi-finalists. I scored 10 1st place speaker awards. We ended up being runner-ups at the State tournament.

2009: First year of Varsity Debate…first year of pain. We didn’t win a single tournament, maybe getting as far as the semi-finals at the smaller tournaments. I did end up getting 1 1st place speaker award but that was about it. Qualified for state but got eliminated early on.

2010: New partner, new year. 3 1st place wins and 2 runner-ups (We actually tied for 1st against another one of our own teams, we gave them the win because they were seniors). Quarter-Finalists at State (A snow storm canceled semi’s so the top quarter-finalists went straight to the final round). Christian Forensics League (National Tournament, prestigious but not the best ie. TOC) participant, we ended up having a winning record (3w-2l) but just missed the cut off to move on by a few points.

Me and a couple friends also passed “legislation” for our entire school district. We had to research energy consumption and waste in every single school K-12 and proposed a policy for schools to “go green.” On top of that we actually had to learn the whole process one goes through to propose anything to the school board. This whole process was such a pain because we started it back in 7th grade and the board kept on rejecting and rejecting it. It was all worth it though because we now have active eco-groups in both the middle and high school, started a new school board committee for environmental awareness, and have already had some of our ideas put into effect (recycling bins in classrooms, motion lights, and having teachers consolidate appliances)

Hooks: I never know what this actually means but whatever. I'm Lao and a first generation. That probably isn't what a hook is though; I'm guessing its a legacy or something.

That’s amazing. I don’t know how much you have to do to get into Duke, but if I worked in admissions I’ll accept you.
I’m also applying but I feel under qualified because everyone seems so competitive.

I got really nervous about my app last year and that’s why I decided to post it here. My bf actually applied to Duke and got rejected. I was so shocked by their decision seeing as I thought he was more than qualified. 35 ACT, strong extracurricular’s (Varsity CX, Track Captain, NHS President, etc.), 4.0 GPA…you name it he had it. On top of all that he was a legacy. I guess that just shows how crazy admissions can be.

On a side note…did you like the movie Black Swan? I’ll love you forever if you say yes :P

Your AP test scores are no offense, terrible compared to other duke students. You only have one 5 and that is in the easiest AP so colleges will notice that and see your lack of studying. I would say its a reach.

Please refrain from resurrecting old threads.
