Chance me for Duke please!!

Stats: (school does not rank)

G.P.A uw: 3.93 w: 3.85ish? not sure. (but duke takes what you have, so they will see 3.93 on my transcript)

8 AP classes by graduation. Rigorous schedule.
Senior Year course load includes 5 APs

ACT:
32 composite 10 essay (March testing)
34 composite 8 essay (April testing)
(i assume they'll look at the 34 composite and 10 essay)

Teacher Recs: should be good, but my science teacher (one of my recommenders) calls me a knucklehead because i screw around a lot, but I do get good grades on his tests etc. I believe he thinks im a good kid who gets good grades but is lazy.

Counselor Recs: should be good. She knows me better than most students, so I believe she'll write a pretty good one.

Academic honors:
National Honor society
Middle Years Programme (its like a mini-IB award)
OAA Scholar Athlete
(this list is very slim, i know.)

Extracurriculars:
Member of three varsity teams (cross country, tennis, track)
-Tennis team placed 3rd in the state
-Captain of the Track and field team for two years
-Drum Major of the Marching Band
-Eagle Scout
-Section Leader of Symphony Band, Full Orchestra, Jazz Band, and the Pit band (for the musical) and a sidenote: Our band played at Carnegie Hall last year.
-Member of a Quartet that consistently receives Division I ratings. The Quartet also received a nomination for the State youth arts festival.
-4 Years in Science Olympiad
-4 Years in Quiz Bowl

Essays:
Common application essay was a personal statement. I feel it is very compelling because I develop a theme of me wanting to use my abilities of leadership and etc to help others become the best they can be. I tie this in with a death of a close family member.

Duke supplemental essay: Not written yet :/

so what do you think? (if you could also chance me for northwestern or upenn RD, that'd be awesome!!)

P.S. I won "Worst case of senioritis" in the senior mock election... my first semester senior year GPA is falling. I currently have three B+'s. What will Duke think of this? I am now committing myself to raising these grades. These B+'s are in AP classes.

You asked a teacher who essentially thinks you’re a slacker to write one of your recs??

essentially, yes. all my teachers know I don’t work very hard, but I get the grade. They know that when my grades drop, I buckle down and do work. I didn’t really have much a choice. He knew me for three years, so he has seen me grow.

and usually teachers write about the best parts of a student. I dont think they’d write “oh this kid is a lazy @#$% don’t take him” our district tells the teachers to write really well because it makes the district look good if we send kids beyond the University of Michigan.

w avg is higher than the uw avg.

to find the weighted avg mult each AP grade by 1.10, that is the weighted AP grade.

For honors classes mult by 1.05

then find avg as normal factoring in ^

okay thanks number41!
but i read on Duke’s website that they take what gpa, so they will see a 3.93.

Can somebody chance me?

Your description of your common app essay leaves a less than favorable impression. I obviously haven’t read it, but it sounds very clich

The Duke Lacrosse team needs some Eagle Scouts. Put that sport down as an interest and you’re in!

you have to be kidding me? a kid with a 4.0 and like a 31 from my out-of-state school got in two years ago…

your friend probably wrote a really bad essay or something like “sorry duke im writing my princeton essay… but i decided to write something in this optional space anyways!!!”

and my common app essay isnt that cliched. i talk about how like my disabled sister helped me accept others for who they are and how she taught me about unconditional love… my sister (who graduated from med school last fall) helped me write it, and she used the same themes in her essays.

thank you dronson54! your opinion is valued. /sarcasm.

@shockazulu. thanks for the input. The common app essay is already submitted though, but I thought it was compelling. My friends thought it was good (and these kids are really smart kids who have very good stats).

But for the duke supp essay, I will try to cater it to what Duke.edu says they want to see in a Duke admit.

a kid from my school had a 4.0 and a 31 and got in though.
