Chance me for ED II please?

I'm thinking about applying to Vandy EDII, but I know it's a very big reach. What do you guys thin -- any point in even trying?

Rank: school doesn't officially rank, but I think I'm somewhere around the top 15-18%.

Average: UW 92.3, I'm not sure what it is weighted.

APs/Honors: School has limited offerings. Honors English 11th grade, Honors French 11th grade, no APs. My school only offers two for juniors, and neither of them were my best subjects. Senior year I'm taking AP English, AP French, and AP Environmental. Hopefully if I do EDII, I can send in a transcript with great mid-term grades in these classes.

ACT: 30 composite

SAT: 2040 composite (750 CR, 710 W, 580 M -- Don't think I want to send these because Math is so awful!)

Lots of extra-curriculars:
- Member of my school's highly regarded theater program for four years, where I acted, directed, sand, dance, wrote scenes and songs that were chosen to be in our shows, and did production jobs.
- Work experience as a waitress and another job as a paid intern at a home-goods company.
- President and co-founder of the club 'Theater For Hope', which raises money for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
- Member of my school's A Capella group.
- Did a leadership and a counselor training session at a YMCA camp (10th and 11th grade), and was a volunteer counselor for two weeks (11th grade).
- National Honors Society
- Member of various clubs like AIDS Awareness, Eco Club, STAND for Darfur

Essays: Really good, I think. I wrote about what it's like to be a triplet.

Also:
- School is HIGHLY competitive, nationally well-regarded, and gets lots of love from colleges. But not sure this can make up for stats slightly below the average Vandy student.
- I would apply to the CAS with a planned Film Studies major.

I'm assuming teacher and counselor recs were great, as well.

It depends on why you wouldn’t want to apply ED I. When I ran the numbers back when I was considering applying to Vanderbilt ED I discovered that ED II is not to your advantage over regular decision, and it is binding if you get in, so I wouldn’t suggest that anyone apply ED II. As far as your chances… if you are a URM they are pretty good, if not, you probably won’t get in. Sorry to sound harsh, but Vanderbilt has become very competitive, and a 30 is low for their range. If you bring that up to a 32 or 33, I would say it is a match.

That’s just my 2 cents, take it for what you want. I am fairly confident that ED II does not provide much of an advantage over RD. In my year I believe the acceptance rates were roughly:

ED I: ~40-50%
ED II: ~ 20%
RD: ~ 16%

I think if you were not going to get in RD, you probably won’t get in ED II. ED I, I would think you would have a good shot regardless of race / gender. Vanderbilt does seem to be broadening its image from ‘rich and white’ recently though.

Okay, thanks for replying!
I didn’t apply ED I because I applied ED I somewhere else…and I’m starting to think my chances of getting in are small because so many other kids from my school are applying ED there. Vandy is my second choice if I don’t get into my first, and I may re-take the SATs and try to improve my math.

I wouldn’t given up on ED II. Your ACT of 30 is at the 25% for freshmen admitted last year. Your ECs sound very good (interesting, with leadership roles), and you’re from a competitive high school. If your essays and recommendations are very good-excellent, you might be a match. Keep your options open; you’ll obviously go to an excellent college.

Thanks, vandyalum!

Do other people agree that EDII isn’t much of an advantage over RD at Vanderbilt?

Bumpppp, anyone else?
