Chance me for ed2?

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2320 (730 CR, 800 Math, 790 Writing). Took twice but did better in every category second time so I didn’t need to superscore
ACT: Didn’t feel the need to take after getting my SAT score.
SAT II: 750 Math II, 740 Chemistry
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): My school doesn’t do GPAs but I’m an A/A- student with 2 B/B+s junior year with incredibly tough Math/Science courses (e.g. Organic chem). My School is very challenging and I take the absolute hardest courses so this didn’t worry me particularly, especially because they send in a folder along with my grades to explain how hard the grading system and courses are.
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Not sure but I’m going to guess top 10% - I’d say top 3% in the humanities and top 15% in math/sciences. Considering 8 or 9 of the 100 kids from my grade are EDing to Harvard and countless others to other ivies and prestigious schools, this doesn’t bother me
AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 on: English literature, AB Calc, US History, AP Chem
IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
Senior Year Course Load: English (our school doesn’t do AP titles for most humanities), Biology, AP Computer Science, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, Government (see above note about course titling)
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar with Distinction, National Latin Exam Gold Medal. in terms of schoolwide awards I was awarded the best sophomore history paper award (which meant a lot considering the kids I was up against)
Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Founder (and sole member – it’s kind of a solo thing) of a program at my grandmother’s nursing home. The basic idea is that I bought 2 iPads and a 230 dollar communication app (proloquo2go for anyone interested) with money I’d earned lifeguarding, spent a great deal of time at the home and taught staff there how to use the program to communicate with patients who were unable to speak. Lots of local tutoring and working with children in multiple homes/schools/programs with various levels of disability. Very specific/individual project I worked on which involved correspondence with local government about cleaning up an illegally placed compost pile in a municipal lot in my neighborhood. By retaining anonymity (nobody’s going to listen to a lowly high school student :p) and using a number of local laws in my favor, I was able to get them to remove the pile. Varsity baseball. Varsity swimming for 3 years – I quit as a senior because of family troubles and needing a lot of time to clear my head, do some soul searching and all that good stuff (being the captain of a swim team would have been far too stressful and swimming has always been a source of great anxiety to me). Wrote a research paper about the benefits of a low carbohydrate diet on a type 1 diabetic’s lifestyle complete with research. Intern at NYC mayor’s office of environmental remediation for 2 years.
Job/Work Experience: Full time lifeguard over the summer 40 hour weeks.
Volunteer/Community service: 300+ hours, for activities see my extracurrics
Summer Activities: Lifeguard full time from late May to early September. Started sophomore year. Have made a lot of saves, maybe that matters for something? Idk lol. I interned at the NYC Mayor’s office of Environmental Remediation for two years.
Essays: my common app essay showed a real love of writing and hopefully demonstrated some skill as well. Talked about an experience I had in 3rd grade reading a picture book that intensified my interest in writing and travel and has motivated/inspired me to this day. My supplement is also strong but im not finished editing yet.
Teacher Recommendation: Should be fantastic – the teachers who are writing my recommendations both loved me, and my history teacher who wrote one of them was the one who nominated my essay for the award which I won.
Counselor Rec: I know her very well, and since my school is small and personal I have a great relationship with her and we speak on a daily to weekly basis depending on how busy I am. She knows me very well and I’m sure she wrote a wonderful, personal rec.
Additional Rec: n/a.

I had almost the exact same stats as you (and I applied to Upenn as well ED).
You have stronger ECs and slightly better test scores than I did. But you come from a very competitive region whereas my region was my hook.

I think you should go ahead and apply. I think you’d do well here.
Probably a good idea to research Emory’s green-ness and tie that in with your EC about the compost pile.

Apply for scholars too.
You won’t get the full program, but I think you’ll get 20k or whatever the partial scholarships are.

And English here is great. Try to take some courses in the Classics department too.

Also, if you wanna go PreLaw, Emory would be the place to do it. But your math/science ability mixed writing skills makes me think you’d really excel in the management consulting world.

I wish I could apply for scholars. My parents had told me before today that we wouldnt ever be able to make it down to Georgia, and since Emory cares a great deal about interest I figured applying would be futile (it remained one of my dream schools but there wasn’t anything I could do about the situation). I discovered that if I wanted to be elgible for merit, I would have had to submit everything by November 15. This moment is particularly heartbreaking for me beacuse my family makes too much for FA but not enough to afford tuition by a long shot since my grandmother is in hospice care and we spend a lot of money there. It’s too bad, but I don’t think I’ll be able to apply now because even if I got in, I wouldn’t be able to go without merit.

Forgot to add that my parents told me today my christmas gift could be to go down to emory, which is why I was getting excited about applying again.

Well, that sucks.

Well, life goes on. I’m going to reach out to Emory and try to explain my situation and lobby for potential aid. If that is unsuccessful, I’ve got other great schools to consider. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond to my post.

It really depends on what you want to do.
For certain industries, the money you’ll be paying is chump’s change based on what you’ll be making upon graduation.

If you are going to be pursuing a less lucrative career, then NYU or SUNY would be great. Hell, NYU would be better than Emory for any corporate job. And Premed too just because it’s so much cheaper. Maybe Emory would be better for PreLaw. Might be better for you to go there.

I think, as a general rule, NYU is a better choice than Emory for New Yorkers. On par academics including great liberal arts but much cheaper and better placement on Wall Street if you’re into that.

I’d love to see how the Premed and PreLaw numbers stack up. I’m sure they’re similar.

Is NYU cheaper? I thought it was really expensive. It’s private you know. Is it kind of like Rice which is cheaper than most of its private peers?

Also, Emory does not take into account interest anymore according to Dean of Admissions, so this person is extremely strong and should almost be a shoe in. But oh well, you didn’t apply for scholars (It was due Nov 15). Maybe just do ED2 and appeal for aid if you can. I think they should be able to help you because you should be really sought after in an ED round. A person with your credentials is probably really rare for ED at Emory.

By the way, your family makes too much for very specific Emory Advantage program aid, but you’ll likely end up with aid. It’s not like your family makes 300k or something (it’s like 150k-200k vs. the 100k cutoff for the loancap program, so you should qualify for a decent amount of aid). If you want to come, also apply to other scholarships not associated with Emory. I had a friend similar to you who won the Coca Cola Scholarship (he was from Ohio) and that helped significantly on top of what he was receiving from Emory. You, with those credentials, can easily rack up money. I would sure as hell like to see you end up at Emory if you actually wanna go (some of the ED1 rounders on this forum were better than normal, and I think you fit well into this trend. The school can use more of you guys).

I was referring to scholarships, yes. I always thought in state people were eligible for morescholarships but idk. Sticker Price wise, they are similar.

I also think you’re stronger than most ED applicants. And RD too. But I would think emory would like to lock you down ED round.
