Chance Me For Elite Schools (Harvard, Princeton, UPenn, Duke) and Public Ivies (UMICH, UVA, etc...)

Hi, I am currently a junior at a top 10 US News and World Report High School in New Jersey. The program is science-focused and very rigorous. All classes are at honors-level if not IB.I am looking to see how competitive my overall resume is to get general admittance into these schools. I haven't specifically narrowed down programs and schools yet I am just trying to get realistic ideas and feedback.

Testing: (Still waiting on ACT score, only relevant if 34+; also may take SAT 1 again in October depending on feedback)
SAT 1 (all in same sitting; second time testing):
Math: 770
Critical Reading: 690
Writing: 710

ACT: hoping for 34 plus

SAT II: (will take in June, these are practice scores)
Bio M - 790
Physics - 740
Math 2: 760

Classroom:
95.79 unweighted GPA, (converts to a 3.9 on our scale which I don't understand, should be higher)
In IB Program (AP isn't option)
IB Math SL
IB History SL
IB Spanish SL
IB Bio HL
IB Physics HL
IB English HL

Extra-Curriculars
Varsity Swimming - 4 years, captain this year and leading scorer
Varsity Tennis - 2 years, 2nd singles

Club Swimming Privately - Swim on competitive team year round (10 or more hrs per week), fast enough to be good DIII swimmer, not fast enough for D1 scholarship money

Service Club (9,10, 11 officer)

Music Club (9,10,11)

NHS

Also a Life Scout in my Boy Scout Troop, currently working toward eagle scout (also senior Patrol Leader), attending Florida Sea Base camp this summer

Boy Scouts , various fundraisers, car washes, beach clean ups
Volunteer at Synagouge every sunday for three years helping out as teachers assistant in religious school

Performer in non-profit percussion group that performs almost weekly in the spring representing various charities and performing at various events, tried out for America's Got Talent

various in-school volunteering sessions
Work

Lifeguarding at Public Beach (3 years) certified in first aid, lifesaving techniques and CPR

Also, recieved 2nd place in regional New Jersey science fair, and moved onto Intel Science Fair pre-cursor Delaware Valley Science fair and got 3rd in my category.

Sorry for the lengthiness and please give feedback!

Your current SAT score is at 1460/2170 which is rather low for the elite schools. It is also around the admission average for UMich. As an oos student, it would be a very high match to low reach even considering your above average GPA. If you do get 34+ in ACT, then it would be a better match for you. If you are going to retake SAT1, try to improve your CR score. What is your intended major?

^agree, I would definitely focus on raising the SAT I and SAT II scores. Your GPA and course rigour looks fine to me. Also i would strive to have more extra curriculars or contest results that set you apart more. Alot of people do the extra curriculars that you do, which makes you just another applicant. I would have extra curriculars or activities that truly to you stands out.

chance back!

@billcsho‌ intended major is business management or biomedical engineering, i want to do both and am looking at dual programs at certain schools

@manwiththeplan‌ I am probably going to retake and go for higher score especially because I got tripped up by one specific reading passage on past SAT, also what extra-curriculars are so general?

I got a higher SAT, comparable SAT IIs, and a comparable GPA and was waitlisted at Penn, so I would not have your hopes up for that one or higher-level ones.

@SETH656 all your extra curriculars are pretty general tbh… if you look on anyone else’s application to elite schools it all looks similar to yours. Sports, model un, music performances etc… Point im trying to make is that none of them are necessarily outstanding to admissions because so many people have them. Focus on an activity that you think you would be stellar at and truly excel in, to stand out. More activities doesn’t necessarily make you stand out.

also chance back!!!

@bobdangles what were your EC like?

Business and engineering at UMich are both highly competitive. So your chance would be even lower. Also, for Biomedical engineering, you need to reach a very good GPA in first year engineering in order to declare it as your major. In addition, you need to finish a master degree in order to get a job in the field. So you should think it through before applying. Umich does have double major in Business and engineering but it is very very competitive. To do a minor in business would be a lot easier.

@billcsho‌ Thanks. Do you think I am a match for business and engineering or am I reach. Also, worth mentioning that my grandmother is a registered alum. I know about the long process but still think both are my goals. Any other similar programs that you know of that are still good just slightly less competitive.

Fairly average, I suppose. I did everything I was “supposed to,” though, to get into a good school. I started a club in my area of interest, helped it grow bigger and more active. I had leadership roles in marching band, which was quite time-consuming. I did some ECs in the area in which I want to major. I won regional and national awards in Creative Writing. I did community service, as required by my HS to graduate. What else should I have done–built an orphanage in Africa? Cured cancer? :stuck_out_tongue: Dunno.

@bodangles‌ I was just curious for my own reference. Where else did you get in?

Oh no, I wasn’t trying to be bitter at you, more at the college process. :stuck_out_tongue:
Pitt and Penn State. Also waitlisted at Case Western. Stupid me only applied to four schools. So you’ve got an advantage on me there!

Your current SAT at 2170 is around ACT32 which is just slightly above 25% for UMich CoE. If you do get 34+ in ACT, then you will be at 75% or higher in admission stat. That should be the level you are aiming at as oos student to be consider a match. uwGPA 3.9 is right at the admission average for CoE.
