Chance me for Emory, Boston College, Davidson, Colby, St. Olaf, USC, UCLA, UCD, UCSD, UCI, Cal poly

Hi! I’m a senior in California. I have a good GPA but not so good test scores (SAT, ACT, AP, SATII). I want to go to medicine so I’m thinking to major in Bio or some Science and to minor in music possibly.

GPA - 3.95UW, 4.4W, 4.17UCgpa
Rank - Top10% (reputable HS)
ACT - 30 (Superscore:32 gathered from three different tests)
SAT - 1410 (not submitting)
SATII - Bio(630), MathII (640), French (670)
AP - Bio(4), Chem(3), English(3), CalcAB(4) (APs currently taken: English Lit, Physics, Econ, CalcBC, Latin)
Course: Most rigorous possibly except for one class due to schedule conflict
EC: 4 yrs. HS Soccer (captain in JV and V), Club Team, Latin Club President, Started a new club, NHS, CSF lifetime member, Newspaper (Chief editor), Symphony Orchestra in community college (state level oboist), Tutoring, Volunteer, etc.

I also have one question. Some of the above schools (and some others that I didn’t list here and am thinking of) accept ACT superscore. My ACT score details are below.

1st ACT - 29(E:28, M:30, R:30, S:28, W:23)
2nd ACT - 30(E:33: M:34, R26, S:28, W:23)
3rd ACT - 29 (E:29, M:28, R:28, S:29, W:?)

I was hoping that my score trend would go upward, however the 3rd one dropped. Because all three scores are very consistent, I’m worried if admission people won’t value my superscore if I send all three scores. If I submit only the 1st and the 2nd, my superscore will be 31 but it might look better since it’s upward trend and the English and Math scores shut up high from the 1st test. I felt very good about the test that I took in Sept but the result was bad, so I’m tired of retaking the test, yet I am worried to send my Oct ACT score, if taking, to my ED school without seeing my score. Can someone please advice me if I should send all three test scores or just the 1st and the 2nd as well chancing me for the above schoools?

Thanks a lot!

I would greatly appreciate if anyone could reply. Thanks!

Your GPA and rank are good. One question I have is: Why don’t you consider submitting your SAT score? It’s roughly a 2000 on the old scoring. A 30 on the ACT—which you plan to submit—is around a 1990.

If I were you, I would take the ACT once more. That is, of course, depending on the school in which you plan to apply ED to. Take a test as much as you can, whether it be the ACT or SAT. The reason of being tired of taking tests is one an aggressive applicant never finds logical or sensible. Do it for your future self—you won’t regret it.

I’m not so sure on Boston College, but some apply to Boston University too, and I’ve noticed that people with academic profiles similar to yours have better chances on passing BU.

UCLA - low reach/high match (because your GPA is only a bit more than its 25% rank GPA)
UCI - match/safety
UCD - match, maybe even a safety
UCSD - match
USC - low reach

I agree with above poster ^^^^, your SAT is better than your ACT of 30.

UCLA: Low Reach
UCSD/UCD: High Match (Biology is capped at UCSD and impacted at UCD)
UCI: Match but definitely not a safety
USC: Low Reach

For SLO, they use 9-11th grades in their GPA calculation and depending upon which major you are applying, it could be a Match-High Match.

Oh I see…I took SAT once and scored 1410, so possibly I may be able to get higher score for my 2nd time…

Only reason why I’ve been trying to improve my ACT score, not SAT, was because some of my interested schools require two SAT subject tests along with SAT score. As you can see, none of my SAT subject tests were good and I didn’t want to use the scores. But now I realized that most of my interested schools required only either SAT or ACT, so I should probably think about retaking SAT for those schools. Thanks so much for your reply!

@Gumbymom, I’m not familiar with the term, SLO…St. Olaf??

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (SLO).

Oh ok, thanks!

Keep in mind for Cal Poly Slo that they superscore the ACT and just consider the Math and English subscores so for them your ACT scores are better - looks like 2nd ACT alone has your best scores for these 2 areas and are solid.

UCD and UCI should not be treated as safeties.

My neighbor’s daughter goes to St. Olaf. Her stats were similar to yours. She and her family are both pleased. It has been a great school for her. They tell me the campus is beautiful, the food is great, and she has blossomed academically.

Thanks all for your reply. @my2caligirls, I didn’t know about Cal Poly superscore system. Thanks for the info!

I’m very curious to see if my states is competitive for Emory. Can anyone familiar with Emory admission please chance me? Thanks!

I’m not too familiar with Emory, but I did a quick search for their admissions profiles. Idk which college you want to apply to (Emory or Oxford) but the stats are slightly higher for Emory. You’re competitive in terms of GPA, but your ACT is a bit below the average.

Here’s the link to the profiles if you haven’t seen them yet: http://apply.emory.edu/discover/fastfacts.php

Emory, not Oxford - thanks for your reply.

In terms of my college councelor, Emory is a match school, but I wanted to get more feedback from other people…
