Would I make it into Emory RD? ED?
Can you recommend other schools where I would match, etc.?

Thanks to anyone who replies! I appreciate your response

@qwxmntklp : “School offers few APs, I have will have taken the most of any student in my school. (I think it shows taking initiative, should i tell them about that?)”

No. When applying to these top privates and publics, taking something close to the upper range of AP/IB courses offered at your school is an EXPECTATION. Simply doing more than normal of what is done at your school (which if it is a basic level school, is also an expectation) does not warrant bragging rights. Also, from the looks of it, your school does not offer few APs. Are some of the ones you listed for senior year self-study or something.

You need to sell the arts and debate awards and engagement I suppose. Your chances are far better for ED than RD. I am not going to recommend match schools if you are entertaining Emory ED (and in addition, I kind of don’t know many other schools admissions schemes like that or if they have a certain type. All I can say is that some of Emory’s private peers are more SAT/ACT score focused in admissions so if you apply to them, you will definitely need a higher score to be in the running. Emory’s scores have increased a bit but the school still focuses on talent, character, and passionate intellectual pursuits perhaps more than folks think an elite private should. I would honestly think of it as a dialed back version of admissions. Focus on diversity, character, and raw talent over a laser focus on scores in comparison to its peers. Its scores are notably lower than HYPSM for example). That doesn’t make much sense. ED consideration should maybe be decided among your top 3 schools, otherwise apply RD.

I will say that your profile is a little too stereotypical for Emory (Emory is a big debate school for example), so it probably wouldn’t stand out in RD even if you did raise your score significantly. You will need to really sell yourself in the personal statements and show good thinking and writing in the short answer supplements. Are there any examples of unusually high academic engagement beyond your AP courses, or are all of your ECs pretty much non-academic? Again, as I am telling many. Often well rounded students with a true spike (maybe yours is art, that may work) stand out because most of the applicant pool is well-rounded over-achievers. Those who are extremely talented or honed in one of their many areas of engagement far beyond what course work and standardized test scores can show are sort of at a premium and may even be viable contenders for scholarships.

There is no point in chancing you (no way we can know and things seem to be changing at Emory), so much as telling you what may be worth trying to pitch to adcoms. Definitely don’t talk about how think taking lots of APs takes initiative. The type of student who self-studies those or does dual enrollment, and goes beyond the offerings at their HS is a dime a dozen at places like Emory.

@qwxmntklp
It’s a Reach either way. But it’s seems as though Emory isn’t really your top choice, only the school you think u can get into with relatively low stats.

@bernie12 Thanks for your advice

@qwxmntklp : I do have a correction. I meant that Emory’s admissions look like a dialed back version of Stanford’s. I meant to exclude it from that group of lettered schools. Stanford’s scores are lower than HYPM, or Chicago for that matter. In its tier (or close) of privates, Emory would be the Stanford. It is the one out of the bunch not trying to reach an SAT median of 1600 lol.

I would point out that one of Emory’s values is diversity and many students here have a passion for foreign languages/cultures. One such way you could connect your art spike to this diversity value of Emory is by expressing how art is a medium for you to connect with cultures across the globe. This is merely an example. Really what you have to do is make a genuine effort in making one of your extracurriculars a spike.

Also, if it gives you any sort of comfort, i got into emory with a 1390. So Emory really does emphasize its essays, intellectual curiosity, and a well-developed spike in your extracurriculars that makes it obvious to the admission officers what it is that truly is your passion.

@“pro@procrastinator” : Is a 1390 bad or something? That’s more than enough to do well at most elite universities. It may not be a good score for some places whose goals is primarily to craft a student body that looks good in terms of what is presented to USNWR. But I think most schools admit plenty of scores in that range provided what you said as well as GPA/rank are solid enough. Probably also based upon who they admitted (if anyone) from your HS in the past.

The general advice I have found on CC is if you are not a top 75% applicant (and even then) don’t expect many to paint a rosy picture. If you are sure Emory is for you, finances are “straight”, apply ED and put together the best app you can and you may get in, but there are no guarantees.

Make sure you have safeties!
