Hi! I’m a junior currently (second semester). I was hoping y’all could take a look at my stats and resume and let me know what my chances are of getting into Emory + Possibly Woodruff Scholarship??!
Here goes:
GPA UW: 3.79
GPA Weighted: 4.42/5.0 or 5.19/6.0
SAT: 1560
Rank: not in top 10% (school is VERYYYY competitive)
I took 4 APs my freshman and sophomore years combined and 6 IBs and 1 AP my junior year and will be taking 5 IBs my senior year
I know my GPA is low for Vandy but I struggled with confidence issues and motivation sophomore year so I got a couple of B’s but my grades have gotten way better my junior year.

You should those who chance know if you plan on applying Early Decision or Regular Decision.
Good luck.
Have you seen the stats of those who applied for the Class of 2023? RD was a bloodbath. It’s not a match/safety for anyone anymore. IMO you probably won’t get Woodruff and I would put Emory as a mid reach.
@ljberkow I’m going to apply RD because my parents won’t pay the tuition most likely and I don’t want to get bound
@TheTennisNinja thanks! I was thinking the same thing about Woodruff because of my GPA and rank.
Is it true they drop freshman grades and recalculate GPA? If that’s true, I prolly won’t get in because my freshman grades were good and my sophomore year was horrible and then I picked it back up junior year.
@smoligil
Ethnicity?
Reach, Scholars is a High Reach for everyone. You have to apply before Nov 15th for scholarship consideration.
I’m Asian. And yeah I know it’s a reach but I’m still hoping my EC’s can get me there.
I agree that your EC might help you get in, depends on other applicants. I believe that most top universities care about the diversity of the incoming students, so if they don’t have enough students that fall in your EC activities, you might have a chance.
@mapar2019 : Eh, that all depends on who applies and you never know. It is always best realizing that you are qualified for admission and maybe even a scholarship, but that you are still not all that likely to get it (especially the scholarship). I’m looking at the OP, and they look like a lot of successful RD applicants EC wise as well as some unsuccessful ones. Nothing “jumps out” but an interesting essay can maybe get them to take a look. I think presentation is key when you want to seriously compete for the scholarship, and lesser so what is actually in the list of activities and accolades, though having some unusually high caliber ones that are rarer probably helps.
@smoligil
All of that looks nice, but don’t expect anything from Woodruff. No one should. Also, Woodruff has a bias towards more intellectual types. Other than Intel Regionals (because Woodruff actually tends to select and even yield finalists), what would you describe as more intellectually focused ECs and co-curriculars. Emory does love leadership and I see lots of that, but it is sort of expected, so that profile and list of activities may merely make you a compelling RD candidate. Really depends on how you sell your drive to think and learn: a) independently, b) really high levels accelerated beyond the capabilities of your HS to serve your needs or abilities, a c) perhaps in non-traditional ways.
“I know my GPA is low for Vandy but I struggled with confidence issues and motivation sophomore year so I got a couple of B’s but my grades have gotten way better my junior year.”
Don’t know what we have to do with Vandy. It seems the two of us have two completely different admissions schemes (for RD/ED and Scholarship. VU emphasizes stats more, but the stats really aren’t particularly different anymore, and the stats of scholarship recipients will likely be very similar, but each will just have a different emphasis in terms of what they think fits the ethos of the school so select differently) beyond “needs clear evidence of being a high achiever”. Either way, expect both to be random or a crap shoot and realize that success or failure at one predicts really nothing at the other. The schools are VERY different in vibe and it reflects in what they focus on in admissions, and you should be aware of that.
