“your A’s in calc 3, ODE, and AP physics don’t really seem aligned with a 31 subscore for the math section on the ACT.”

Well, the ACT does NOT test Calc 3, ODE, or AP Physics. Also, those are grades over the course of an extended period of time. Maybe he had a bad day on the ACT. His math score on the ACT represents a score for 1 hour.

my point was that students who take courses like calc 3 and ODE during their junior year of high school are usually fairly good at math, and you’d expect them to have correspondingly high math subscores.

I am very good at math, but I took algebra 1& 2 and geometry (the math courses ACT tests you on) thought my 6th,7th and 8th grade years. So unlike a majority of the kids taking it nationwide I had to attempt to refresh the knowledge from the back of my head. And my teacher for all 3 of those classes was awful. If the ACT to test on calculus I’d for sure be in the 35/36 range lol

You should be a high match to low reach for UMich CoE in state as your ACT is below 25% and GPA below average. It seems you did not do much preparation for ACT, otherwise, you should not score that low in Math. If you can forget Math skills from several years ago, it is not a good sign for success in the college of engineering. You should definitely consider retaking ACT with some preparation to boost your chance.

I actually was tutored for the ACT but was more focused on English and reading than I was for engineering. But I feel like my math grades and courses will help justify it. I’m sure they’d prefer an A in calc 3& diffEQ over basic algebra 2 skills

They’d prefer an A in calc and in algebra 2 too.
It is hard to tell how easy or hard to get an A in Calc in your school, but it is easy to tell the difference between 31 and 34 in ACT Math.

slalomboy, the difficulty of the calc 3 and ODE courses you took may seem suspicious given your relatively low math subscore. where did you take those courses?

I took them through the Syracuse University Project Advance Program! So the tests and final were the same as what the students as the actual college received

I think it is crazy to think anyone would study for the ACT if you’re in a bunch of AP and honors courses.

Maybe you just had a bad exam, it happens, but the “I took those classes a long time ago” excuse doesn’t work when those classes are the foundation for everything you are learning now and will continue to learn.

You also aren’t a super rare case, I was on the same track you were, a lot of kids are. I’m guessing most did better than a 31 on the math section too…

Posters on here will like to tell you it is all over because of that score, that’s ridiculous. You are an in-state student, so you should have a pretty good shot.

I have to ask though, how is your weighted GPA only slightly higher than your unweighted GPA if you took 15 Honors/AP courses? How does your school weight these courses?

Maybe you should take the Math II subject test and send it to Michigan. If you score an 800, as you probably should, that’ll probably excuse you from the 31 math score. Physics might be a good idea too. Apply EA still, but just send the scores as soon as you can.

Some honors are weighted and some are not. For instance calc 3 and Dif EQ was because it is above the AP level. But like honors English 9/10/11 were not
