Chance me for Engineering :]

Well, to start off I'm looking at UIUC Engineering. I'm currently thinking of Chemical or Environmental Engineering.

Grade: 11th, Junior
Gender: Female
Ethnicity: Asian
State: OOS
Rank: My school doesn't do ranks, however my school is a VERY competitive school.

Unweighted GPA: Around 3.4 or 3.5
Weighted GPA: 3.95

SAT: I'm actually waiting for my scores now but for my practice tests I usually get Math - 750 to 800, Reading 620 - 670, Writing 650 - 700. (2020 - 2170)

SAT II:
Chem - 750
Taking Math II in June.

I'm in all honors with one AP (english).
My school doesn't normally offer APs to sophmores and don't offer APs to freshman.

Next years AP classes:
AP Calc BC
AP Computer Sci
AP Macroeconomics
AP Chemistry

Last summer I went to John Hopkins Summer Program (NOT CTY and NOT DISCOVER HOPKINS! XD) and took the college courses:
Introduction to Programming Java
Introduction to Biochemistry

For this summer I'm going to UCLA.
I'll be taking
Organic Chemistry
History of Asian Americans
Beginning Vocal Techniques (<- just for the fun of it :])

Extracurricular:

I have around 100 hours of community service as of now.
In 10th grade:
Adult Life Skills - I helped the disabled learn how to cook (It got cut because of the budget D: )
TSA (Technology Students Association) - Same mojo as Adult Life Skills... got cut.

In 11th grade:
Waksman Student Scholars - It's a Rutgers University funded high school program where we research a specific species, analyze its proteins and functions and such.
Citizenship Classes - I'm a teacher assistant there and help do normal clerical work and translate for the ESL students there.

In general I've been in:
Youth Council - A small group that my town has. Hopefully going to be Co-President next year.
Chinese school - Self explanatory... I've been there since I was in kindergarten.

Sorry for the super long post D: This is probably my first choice school and will be doing Early Action.

Thanks for you time! ^^

Match for all engineering, but perhaps not bioengineering.

I would be surprised if you don’t get in. Aim for more prestigious schools. Your GPA and test scores aren’t the best, but since you are a female, you have a very good chance.

A question. Why is bioengineering so small and competitive?

Thanks for the input. I’m pretty oblivious to most of this college stuff so I’ll probably go research some more into it… or just look around CC ;D

Although I’m not planning on majoring in it, I was also wondering why bioengineering is so competitive.

@sd111

It’s a relatively new program at UIUC. It began in 2005, and the university has not gotten around to expanding as of yet.

Given it’s size, combined with it’s popularity makes it competitive.

ehhh your kind of iffy. my brother is a freshman down at U of I. my other brother knows a lot of people on admissions so I know a lot bout it. if u were going into like business you’d be good. engineering is very competitive. I think if u were a male u wouldn’t get accepted but there aren’t too many females in engineering so I would say your probably in.

illinifan-I know engineering is competitive but business is too because it is a smaller college. I think there are only about 500-600 business majors per class…total 2400 in the college, whereas there are 2000 engineers in the freshman class with a total of 8000 undergrad. I know the pool of students is more competitive for engineering but it is very difficult to get into business just because of the sheer numbers…that is few very kids for a lot of apps!

completely agree but business u don’t need as high of an ACT/GPA…etc.

Don’t forget too the importance of writing a good essay(s). Have someone proofread it for grammar & diction. Make it interesting…
