Extracurriculars:
Academic Team, school level: 4 years, Secretary as sophomore, Vice President as junior, President as senior. Organized (40 hours of work) a middle school tournament in my area to encourage kids to learn outside of the classroom and become interested in academic team as an activity.
Academic Team, county level: 3 year member, finished 2nd at state as a sophomore and junior
8 hours per week total
Literary Magazine: 3 years, Junior editor as a junior, Editor-in-Chief as a senior. We create and sell a publication of student writing and artwork. Proceeds benefit charities of our choosing.
2 hours per week
National Honor Society, Co-President senior year: Head up club activities and charitable outreach as well as administrative work.
3-5 hours per week
Spanish National Honor Society, Co-President senior year: Same as with NHS, but with an emphasis on learning about and discussing Spanish culture and language and encouraging our members to do so (I also studied abroad in Spain for 3 weeks between sophomore and junior year. Really eye opening and important in my interest in economics and political science).
1 hour per week
Drama Club/International Thespian Society: work in Publicity bringing people to shows and publishing show material, such as playbill, tickets, etc.
as needed, usually 10-15 hours per show, 3-4 shows per year

I also compete in dog shows from time to time and have earned some titles and awards.

Service:
I do various activities with a local teen volunteer group and have volunteered at a theatre/drama camp in the summer, but my focus is really with animal rescue groups. I work with several groups in my area doing 1-5 hours of volunteering (depends on schedules) per week with cats, dogs, and horses, and also fundraising; just over $1000 for one so far (doesn't sound like a lot compared to what some kids have raised but it's a big boon to them and I'm proud of it). Since becoming Co-President of NHS I have also organized activities with these charities. All told, about 300 hours of volunteering.

Essays and rec letters will be very good. 1 rec will be from my Bio teacher who is also the NHS sponsor and very passionate about animal rescue. The other will likely be from my AP and IB Geography teacher who loves me and whose classes I really enjoyed (7s in IB Geography are really, really rare at my school).

Intended Major(s): Economics and Political Science with a minor in Spanish/Political Economy and Spanish where offered.

Schools:
Stanford (reach for everyone, I know, but am I in the ballpark? Also secondary legacy but don't think I can put that on the app)
Yale (Same as Stanford)
Oxford (I'm pretty familiar with the process and know the difficulty)
Georgetown SFS (#1), EA
UChicago, EA
Penn: Huntsman, then CAS for preference
Northwestern
Williams
Washington in St. Louis
UVA (OOS), EA
UNC (OOS), EA
Washington and Lee
NYU
George Washington University
UMiami
LSU (safety)
Working on finding some more safeties and deciding how to trim this list.

School setting: Really poor, urban, underperforming school with a high-performing IB program inset. We usually send a couple of kids to the Ivies and a few others to top 20 schools every year.
Demographics: White, female, won't be applying for financial aid. Parents both went to college, dad is a doctor.

Finally, thank you for reading my ridiculously long thread! :D

Forgot to mention: for Oxford I would be applying in either English, English and History, or one of the History programs, not Economics.

first off you are definitely in the ballpark as far as grades/scores are concerned

your extracurriculars are pretty unique and impressive and you should be strong if your essays are as good as you say they’ll be  but as you are wanting to major in economics/political science you should probably emphasize your background there

Stanford - mid-reach but at least slightly better than the average applicant
Yale: see stanford
Oxford: know nothing about
Georgetown: low reach/high match
UChicago: low reach
Penn: mid-reach
Northwestern - high match
Williams - low reach/high match
Washington in St. Louis - low reach
UVA (OOS) - match
UNC (OOS) - match
Washington and Lee - high match
NYU - match
George Washington University - match
UMiami - match
LSU (safety) - safety :D

They should be pretty good; maybe not stun-the-adcom-speechless superb, but well written, very meaningful, and very representative of my passions. Thank you for taking the time to chance me!

Your academics are pretty superb, and your EC’s are decent.

Stanford - mid to high reach, really depends on your essay
Yale: see stanford
Oxford: know nothing about
Georgetown: high match/match
UChicago: low to mid reach
Penn: mid-reach
Northwestern - high match
Williams - low reach/high match
Washington in St. Louis - low to mid reach
UVA/UNC (OOS) - since you’re out of state and don’t have legacy, high match
Washington and Lee - don’t know much about this college
NYU - match
George Washington University - match
UMiami - match/safety
LSU (safety) - safety

Thank you!

Hi. This is what I personally feel after evaluating your information. Please don’t take anything I say to be offensive or that important as like you, I’m just another high school student :)

Your academics are top notch. Like seriously. I’m actually impressed by the number of courses you’ve taken/your grades in them.

You might want to retake the SAT… For HYPS, you want to shoot for a 2300+. That Math 2 score isn’t the best either.

Your EC’s are somewhat average, meaning that a lot of kids do these things. They aren’t particularly impressive or unique.

I REALLY like your work service with the animal rescue group. I feel as though you could make a fantastic essay out of this.

I thought that I would just post on schools that I am familiar with.
Stanford: High reach
Yale: High reach
UChicago: Medium reach
Penn: Medium reach
Northwestern: Reach
Washington in St. Louis: Reach
UNC (OOS), EA: I heard from many of my friends that UNC-Chapel Hill OOS is harder to get into than Duke. So I’m not sure about this one.

Not offended at all, I appreciate the input! My SAT and SAT Math II do worry me. Math has never been my strong suit (I have never scored above a 700 on a SAT/PSAT official test) and I didn’t really prepare for my SAT IIs like I should have, although I doubt I could have scored much higher. I’ve gone back and forth about retaking them because several of those schools (Georgetown, Penn, Yale, and Stanford off the top of my head) will require full score reports (only SAT, not subject tests for Stanford), so they will see that I would be taking the SAT a third time. There’s also no guarantee I would do better. I’m hoping the 740 at least makes up a bit for my 670 on the SAT Math and my B in Pre-Calculus (which only happened because of one test that everyone failed because there was actual calculus on it and the teacher refuses to curve or give retests). The 1430/1600 is worrisome, though (darn writing being my best section!) I would appreciate input on retaking, though.

I’m glad people like the animal rescue work; I was afraid colleges might find it a bit weird and maybe secondary to volunteering with groups helping people. It’s definitely going to be a focus in my essays (probably supplemental, not Common App).

UNC OOS is really weird. I go on the threads here and think I don’t have a shot, but we typically get students in every year and my stats are a lot stronger than theirs.

Thank you so much for your input!

Hey! Thanks for replying to my post. You have a really impressive record and here is what I think are your reaches/matches/safeties.

One reservation is your SAT I/ACT score (I’m also in a very similar situation to you here). Try to take both tests one more time. If you can get a 2300+ or a 35+ on either of these tests, you’ll be set!

Stanford- mid reach
Yale- mid reach
Oxford- mid reach
Georgetown SFS-- low reach
UChicago-- low reach
Penn-- low reach
Williams-- match
Washington in St. Louis-- match
UVA (OOS), EA-- match
UNC (OOS), EA-- match
Washington and Lee-- match
NYU-- safety
George Washington University-- safety
UMiami-- safety
LSU – safety

I am considering taking the ACT again in September. I think I’m going to get the red book and see if I can get a 34 or 35 on practice tests (which really boils down to improving my math and science scores). I feel taking the SAT a third time might hurt me for those schools that will see all of my scores, but I can probably slide by with a second ACT. For what it’s worth, when I visited Georgetown they said they really only look at test scores from the second semester of junior year and the first semester of senior year even though they require all of them. Hopefully that’s true. Thanks for chancing me!

Are you doing early a/d to any if these school? If you do Stanford’s it definitely becomes more of a low-mid reach.

Stanford: Reach
Yale: Reach
Georgetown: Low reach/High match
UChicago: Reach
UPenn: Reach
Williams: Reach
WUSTL: High match
UVA: High match
UNC: High match
Washington and Lee: Match
NYU: Match
GWU: Low match
UMiami: Safety
LSU: Safety

Now, for all the schools that I listed as reaches, I believe you are quite a competitive applicant.

I plan on doing EA to UNC, UVA, Miami, UChicago, and Georgetown. If it weren’t for Georgetown I might do Stanford SCEA because I could still apply to UNC and UVA (Miami is a safety and I’m not wild about UChicago). I think I will likely be deferred EA at Georgetown given that they’re even more selective EA than RD, but I don’t want to risk it.

Thanks Achilles09! I understand about those schools being a reach for everyone, which factors into my EA decision; obviously if I were accepted to Stanford or Yale and Georgetown I would have to change my decision and take a hard look, but the odds of that happening are so slim I don’t think it’s worth risking my Georgetown chances for a SCEA bid.

ThelastStarr I suppose it is worth noting that I think my Stanford essays will be my best; they just really seem to suit me more than any other college’s prompts. I already know what I’m writing about for intellectual vitality (big moment in my life intellectually, natural to write about) and my what matters to you? essay will definitely be about my work with animal rescue/adoption charities and how it’s changed my life.

Dang it, now I’m thinking about SCEA…thoughts? Could I get into Georgetown RD?

You are abusing the crap out of EA lol! Also ruining the whole dream of possibly only having to write 1 app!

Well you never know. If you write an incredible essay saying that Stanford or Yale is the school for you or something that really makes you appeal to them, then you have a great shot SCEA. Don’t worry about wasting your EA for a SCEA, apply EA or SCEA wherever you’d be most happy. If that place is Stanford, then go for it! After all, what if you would have gotten accepted at Stanford SCEA, but you never applied?

Yeah, I guess I just figure EA gives me a better shot and that’s more apps done early, lol. I am a really cautious person so I’m wary of SCEA and getting rejected and blowing my chances at other schools. I visited Georgetown and it was great; not a perfect fit, but I don’t think any school is. I haven’t visited Stanford but think I would love it, especially since it has a reputation for really being about passion for what you do and having a strong entrepreneurial spirit (and hey, the weather doesn’t hurt). I guess I’m just still really undecided. I really like Georgetown SFS but I am concerned about getting a non-government job afterwards. I’m really into political discussion, but I suppose that any top school with bright people, even those not in DC, will have that.

What I’m trying to say is I guess it really does come down to Georgetown EA or Stanford SCEA, which allows me to still apply to UNC and UVA EA, both of which I have visited and would be perfectly happy at (particularly UNC). I’m just so cautious.

Haha just apply wherever you are most happy and wherever you think you’ll be most successful
