Chance me for Georgetown!!

I have always dreamed of going to the Georgetown. Unfortunately, I do not think my stats are where they need to be. What are my chances?

GPA
Weighted = 4.54
Unweighted = 3.95

Rank
3-4/238 Will be number 1 when next ranking comes out

There was a problem during my 10th grade year. Our BRVGS teacher blatantly stated no one in the class would be receving an A for the year, during the first week of school. This stirred up much debate, due to the fact that this is the sole B on my transcript. The school board is deciding what actions need to be taken.

ACT
29 (I know this will be the weakest portion of my application; I am retaking this in October. Hopefully, my scores will be much higher)

I am taking the SAT IIs in November.

I have close to 150 hours of community service, ranging from Trick or Treating to cans, to helping out at the local Santa's Workshop. I volunteer at the UVa Hopsital in the Cancer Treatment, and I have also volunteered at the local SPCA.

As far as recommendations and application essays, I feel both portions will be very strong.

My school is in a very rural section of Virginia. Although, we do send students to places such as UVa, William and Mary, Johns Hopkins, MIT, and the United States Air Force Academy. I know this is a very rough resume, and my stats may not be all that great, but I am very optimistic. Thank you.

good gpa, i guess you could have more prez/vice positions but with sports that pretty tough, are you applying early because that would help your chances i think, good luck

I can't tell specifically about your chances, other than I think you'd be a strong candidate. But having graduated from Georgetown and worked a lot with prospective students/admissions office and coming from a central Virginia high school I think the fact you are coming from a rural area will help you not hurt you. If you can't fit all your stats on the application include a resume. Also, make sure your application is not generic. The more specific you can be about why Georgetown and not any other school is perfect for you the better. I know there are sections on the application that give you room to be a little creative, don't feel the need to jam a bunch of stats into those sections, you can show personality and have a sense of humor. Again, this is my own personal opinion, and even though I have worked with the admissions office I do not represent them in any way.

Your GPA makes the cut and your SAT will also be crucial in this step. Once you make it past this, your EC's will be evaluated.

You are a dedicated secretary and that's great. Georgetown likes consistency and commitment. You excel academically and participate in sports. Great. However, this is looking like a typical college application which you want to steer away from (as sportula just mentioned).

Applying early decision may help you, early action will not. So far, you are on the right track, but steer your application focus in another direction. Allow your passion and dream to attend Georgetown to show through a piece of paper and words. You will be asked to write an essay about a global issue (if they haven't changed it), be unique. You can predict with 65% of the prospective students will write about. Try to find room for your personality in the application. I too have worked with admissions; however, I have never made decisions on applications.

Where you are from may or may not play a part in the application, I am pretty certain it will not hurt you.

Explaining the one B on your transcript in the space they allow for extras will not be the best use of that space. Students overly devoted to perfect grades and scores is not what GT is interesting in. Again, it's an interesting University in that it truly looks at students as people, not as machines of knowledge. Relax, smile, have confidence, let your dream show on your application.

I hope it goes well for you.

My S graduated from a small-town school in Western VA and goes to the SFS--as far as we know he's the only person ever to attend G'Town from that achool. He's only met one other kid from anywhere near our home town. It's also been very interesting to him how ignorant the people in DC are about the state of VA. The other students may be a very cosmopolitan crowd, many of whom can name the streets of Paris or Mumbai, but they have no clue where the Blue Ridge mountains are and seem surprised that people outside the beltway actually have indoor plumbing. My S feels he is the one who brings some (regional) diversity to his peers even though he grew up only a few hours down the road from G'town.
