What is your SAT sectioned out into W/CR/M, and what is your GPA?

Columbia: Reach
-not your stats in particular, just that it’s hard for everyone. Also, you don’t really have a hook, your stats are good but not outstanding

Duke: Low Reach
JHU: Low Reach
-Your SAT’s are good for these schools, your ECs are decent, and your course load is challenging. You’re certainly “in the running” as they would say, however all three of these schools are ultra competitive and you could easily be denied from all three by no fault of your own. Make sure you have some reaches and safeties!

Ahh, got it. What makes Columbia (aside from the fact that it’s an Ivy) so much harder to get into than Duke/ Hopkins? Also, do I have a better shot if I’m doing ED?

Not entirely sure if that’s true but just basing that off my personal experience: got into duke/jhu but rejected at columbia. I think a part of it has to do with the fact columbia has their own application and at least for me, I didn’t put in the same effort I did with the common app

The fact that Columbia is an Ivy (and is in NYC) has an indirect affect on its selectivity. The aforementioned factors increase the number of applications it receives, and therefore makes it (seem to be) more difficult to get into - Columbia’s acceptance rate (6.9%) is palpably lower than Duke’s (11.6%). Columbia’s average test scores are higher as well. All-in-all, though, I would put both Columbia and Duke as reaches (mid-high for Columbia), and JHU as a low reach.
