Chance Me for Ivies and T20 (kind of)

Wow your grades and ECs look amazing! If you don’t mind me asking, how did you get an internship at HMS in tenth grade? I’m a underclassmen as well and am looking for future summer internships. I did some research on the Harvard website but couldn’t find any for high schoolers specifically.

I’d have to agree, and just remember that with everything going on this year, be mindful of how much more GPA may be weighted in the admissions process. ED is probably your best shot, but make sure it is a school you would be ecstatic going to. The worst thing I see is when a kid gets into a school ED and still feels like he wished he applied to “more prestigious schools” or “higher-ranked schools.” Albeit, the students are usually going to wonderful schools, but don’t ED JHU if your heart isn’t set on it. I’m sure you will do great things regardless!

@violin177 just email professors and let your resume/GPA do the speaking.

What if I have little experience in lab work? Would you recommend taking any classes before asking for an internship?

@violin177 I honestly don’t think it’s needed. If you have any other questions just PM me.

Thanks so much for your reply! Unfortunately I can’t PM anyone on CC, haven’t been active long enough. Could we talk about internships on this thread instead: “___pre-med”? I am hoping to be a pre-med student as well.

Your Academia is excellent, but when it comes to the Common App Activities, try and find a central theme that you can warp all your activities around. BTW, your ECs are amazing. Remember, these competitive schools are looking to make a diverse class so it would be difficult for a well rounded applicant to present yourself in a unique setting. Find your central theme and develop your own narrative for your entire application. However, if you show the AdCom that you are someone who is well rounded and belongs to their school through your essays and supplements, then you are a strong candidate for all those institutions.

It also seems like you are interested in becoming a Doctor? JHU has an extremely competitive pre med environment so it is very difficult to do well in the Pre Med track there. Brown and Dartmouth are a bit more on the liberal-arts side and are less competitive when it comes to Pre Med. For Brown PLME I think you have a good balance between Medical ECs and Non-Medical ECs which is important. (Nail the Supplements). TBH, I think your best option for Early Decision would be UPenn. It has a very good pre med program, super diverse, awesome social life, great CAS, **Wharton (if your into Econ/Business), Medical Research Opportunities at Perelman, etc. UPenn has an ED acceptance rate of almost 20% (Very High Compared to other Ivies). They also give good financial aid depending on your situation.

Otherwise, I would look into your local state schools and see what they have to offer. Getting that 4.0 GPA at a State School is much easier for Pre Med then it would be at a T20. You would easily get into the major/s that you want and have a really good shot at scholarships. Undergrad Prestige is not taken into consideration for Med School. You also save lots of $$$.

Thanks for your help! I do think that I want to ED JHU just since I really am interested in the intersection between biology and engineering. My goal is to eventually get an MD/PhD, and I see JHU as an institution that will help me get there.
