Chance Me for Michigan State University

To start, I have a 3.886 GPA, and a 1250 SAT score (out of 1600)- 680 CR/W, 570 Math. I also got a 25 on my ACT but I don’t think I’m going to send that score in because my SAT is better. I am interested in going into Mechanical Engineering as my major (I am female). I have a small upward trend in my grades (I’ve gotten A’s and nothing less than B+'s my entire HS career. I’ve never had more than 1 B+ in a school year). I will be retaking my ACT on September 10th, aiming for a 27/28/29.

I have taken Intro to Engineering my freshman year. I am technically one year ahead in mathematics (took Geometry in 9th grade, algebra 2 in 10th grade, and precalc in 11th). As a senior, I will be taking 3 AP classes (AP Literature, AP Calculus, AP Physics).

I played travel softball for 10 years (including this summer) but I am done now as a result of knee problems. I plan to help coach a team this year somehow.

I organized and ran a week-long camp 2 years in a row at a local sports business (my dad happened to partially own it, but that’s beside the point). All of the money earned was donated directly to our local softball organization.

I was in 4-H for 6 years. I did it until my sophomore year of high school. I was a treasurer in my club during my freshman year and secretary my sophomore year. In 4-H we did a lot of volunteering but it wasn’t really anything that I could count as community service because we did lots of little things as a group. The entirety of our state 4-H programs is an extension of Michigan State University.

I was on my school varsity Equestrian Team in 9th grade. I was also a part of my school’s JV softball team freshman year. (I played on both JV teams)

I didn’t do NHS (dumb idea on my part) and I should have done it this year but I had heard that it is pointless in most cases. My school isn’t overly heavy into it. I did do Link Crew this year (where we welcome and mentor incoming freshmen)

I was in a Hippology (study of the horse) club from 8th-10th grade. I competed at MSU a few times, actually. This was a club outside of school. I placed first in Individual Communications/Public Speaking and our team came in first for the entire competition.
I own and show a horse and I am heavily involved in that. I am always at MSU showing (should I add that into my app as well?)

Due to the rigorous schedule of horses and softball, plus school, I was never available enough to get a job. I am doing the early application for the college. I haven’t done much volunteering outside of 4-H and this coming venture, and if I did, I never logged it (of course…).

MSU has been my dream school since I was in 6th grade and I’m worried that I haven’t done enough to get in. What are my chances for getting in, and if I can up my chances, how so?

Thank you!

Your extracurriculars are good. Is your GPA weighted or unweighted? Also, if you’re considering going into mechanical engineering, I would suggest taking the new SAT again to increase your math score. Engineering would require strong ability in math and science, which could also be covered by SAT Subject Tests.

I believe my GPA is unweighted. I took one honors class in 10th grade (I’m not sure if that’s weighing or not) and then this year will be 3 AP’s. But the 3.886 is what shows up on my transcript. – sorry, I’m not quite sure how all of the weighing works. I will be retaking the ACT on the 10th and I am working on improving my science and math scores (I only took it once, the 25 was my first score and I didnt study). The SAT i will be retaking on October 1st.
