To start, I have a 3.886 GPA, and a 1250/1600 SAT score (680 R&W, 570 Mathematics). I also got a 25 on my ACT (27 Reading, 24 Math, 22 science, 22 Writing) but I don’t think I’m going to send that score in because my SAT is better (I took the ACT as practice for the SAT so technically I could have tried harder). I am almost considering retaking these, but I am worried that they won’t make the early application deadline as the next SAT is Oct. 1 and next ACT is Sept. 1.
I am interested in going into Mechanical Engineering as my major (I am female). I have a small upward trend in my grades (I’ve gotten A’s and nothing less than B+'s my entire HS career. I’ve never had more than 1 B+ in a school year)
I have taken Intro to Engineering my freshman year. I am technically one year ahead in mathematics (took Geometry in 9th grade, algebra 2 in 10th grade, and precalc in 11th). As a senior, I will be taking 3 AP classes (AP Literature, AP Calculus, AP Physics) and I am considering taking an IB Class (or possibly switching into a college engineering class if I can).
I played travel softball for 10 years (including this summer) but I am done now as a result of knee problems. I plan to be an assistant coach this fall and give younger girls free pitching lessons as a volunteer effort.
I was in 4-H for 6 years. I did it until my sophomore year of high school. I was a treasurer in my club during my freshman year. (SIDE QUESTION: Should I include the assistant/pitching coach info in my college application even though I haven’t done much of it yet? And should I mention that I was in 4-H from middle school-high school or just high school?) In 4-H we did a lot of volunteering but it wasn’t really anything that I could count as community service because we did lots of little things as a group. The entirety of our state 4-H programs is an extension of Michigan State University.
I was on my school varsity Equestrian Team in 9th grade. I was also a part of my school’s JV softball team freshman year. (I played on both JV teams)
I didn’t do NHS (dumb idea on my part) and I should have done it this year but I had heard that it is pointless in most cases. My school isn’t overly heavy into it. However, I am doing Link Crew this year.
I was in a Hippology (study of the horse) club from 8th-10th grade. I competed at MSU a few times, actually. This was a club outside of school.
I own and show a horse and I am heavily involved in that. I am always at MSU showing (should I add that into my app as well?)
Due to the rigorous schedule of horses and softball, plus school, I was never available enough to get a job. I am doing the early application for the college. I haven’t done much volunteering outside of 4-H and this coming venture, and if I did, I never logged it (of course…).
MSU has been my dream school since I was in 6th grade and I’m worried that I haven’t done enough to get in. Now that it’s the summer before my senior year, there’s not much that I can do now. What are my chances for getting in, and if I can up my chances, how so?
Thank you!
