Chance Me for Michigan!

Hi!

I’m a Senior at a performing arts high school. I’ve included my list of schools that I’m applying to…can anyone tell me if they think I need to add more safety schools?

I’m applying as a Musical Theatre major. I’ve sent in my prescreens and have received dates for both Pace & Penn State. However, UMichigan hasn’t confirmed…do you think I have any chance for Michigan? It’s my dream school, so let me know.

GPA: 4.0
SAT: 1670

Extracurriculars:
–Senior Class President (Last year: Junior Class VP)
–CSF President

–San Diego Unified District Advisory Council Member
–Community Outreach Chairman (La Jolla Playhouse Student Board)
–UCSD Extension Reading Program (One summer)
–Performed in around 20 musicals
–National Youth Arts Nomination
–Delta Sigma Theta Black History Essay Contest Winner
–Mock Trial President (10th & 11th grade yr)
–Have traveled to a bunch of places!

My schools are:

 1. NYU: Tisch
 2. University of Michigan
 3. Carnegie Mellon
 4. Pace University
 5. Penn State
 6. Fordham (BFA Acting)
 7. USC (BFA Acting)
 8. UCLA
 9. University of Cincinnati: College Conservatory of Music
 10. UC Irvine

I think no one has answered you for two reasons: 1) these “chance me” threads are pretty silly…why would we, parents and students going through the same process, be able to estimate your odds of getting into a school? and more importantly, 2) THERE IS NO CHANCING FOR MT OR ACTING. Except for NYU, which seems to weigh academics and the audition equally, admission to all of these schools is based on, almost exclusively, your audition. Yes, there are some pretty minimal academic standards you have to meet for most schools, but really…it comes down to your audition and how talented you are. We have no idea how talented you are. If you want to post some YouTube clips of you singing/acting/dancing, we might be able to give you our personal opinion, but no one here can estimate your chances of getting in to these schools. I will say, however, that your list is very top heavy, and I hope you have a non-audition safety or a Plan B. Sorry…don’t mean to be a downer, but that’s the way it is. Good luck.

Regarding your comment that you have not heard back from Michigan prescreens, I posted on another thread that my daughter has not heard back from them either. Another poster knows someone who hasn’t heard. So I suspect that Michigan did not complete their prescreen process prior to 12/23 as they planned. Don’t know why, but I assume it is something like either a professor got sick or larger number of prescreens than the expected (or could be something else entirely). But I suspect they will respond to everyone as soon as they can, they know the calendar is marching on.

Otherwise I tend to agree with VeritasMT on this - there really is no way to know what a particular school is looking for at a given time, so hard to say who would get accepted. This is my & D’s first time through this process, but I’ve read enough on CC to know that it is very difficult to predict the selection process.

@VeritasMT: Thanks for the advice! I understand the audition weighs heavily on the application decision. However, I’ve heard Michigan cares a lot more about the academic side to their applications so thats why I posted this. I didn’t post it to ask about my artistic chances because I know you obviously can’t evaluate that. Can you recommend any non-audition schools??

@raellis123: Thanks so much! I’m kind of doing this on my own and I just wanted to see if other people had received information I hadn’t.

Danny, take a look at the thread called " Big List of MT Colleges by Program Type." It lists all the BA, BFA, AA, and 2-year certificate programs that don’t require auditions. But, the big one that comes to mind is Muhlenberg…check out that thread as well.

You must pass an academic “prescreen” before they will say yes to your prescreen - you may not make it academically :frowning: It may not be the same academic standard for MT but they do look at academics before inviting you live.

My S has a 3.8 and the same SAT score he was invited to a live audition. He submitted the prescreen 11/24 and didn’t hear until 12/22.

There you go dannyhelms - you should be set!

@MTMajorCook: That’s awesome to hear :slight_smile: Thanks!
@Raam1012: Yeah, thats what I heard. I’m glad to know its confirmed.
@monkey13: Okay, thanks!

That said I’m going go all mom on you like I did to him…take that test again! lol

@MTMajorCook: Do you think I CAN retake it again? I’ve already taken it 3 times and sent them my score, but do you think they’ll see my score in time??

Danny that’s your total score, including the writing/essay part right?

I’ve been telling my son to retake it to up his academic scholarships. For example from Rider he received 16K but if he raised his SAT 100 points he’d get 18K and if 200 points he get approx 20K(without writing/essay portion he is only at 1050)

Yeah, thats including everything. My writing is always my best score, but I’ve heard that colleges care more about the Math and Critical Reading sections. But dang thats a good difference.

If I take my SAT on January 25th, I’ll have to try and reschedule my University of Cincinnati audition because its the same day.

Will colleges accept my January score even though its late?

Before you do all that you better ask the school. I am assuming (and possibly incorrectly) you can resubmit higher scores at a later date for more scholarship money but I could be wrong.

MTMajorCook: Okay, hopefully thats the case. Thank you!

So my S GPA (unweighted) is only 3.4 but is SAT score is 2100, I believe is GPA is lower because of the demands hi High School makes on their Fine Arts students, they are so committed to their shows, chorus and dance schedules it is very hard to keep up academically. He did pass his prescreen with Michigan, but now I worried that is GPA is too low. Does anyone know how they factor in the GPA and SAT scores? Is this acceptable for Michigan?

Inspired59: If you don’t mind my asking, what is his GPA weighted? Because his SAT is definitely high enough. After creating this thread, I’ve learned that Michigan definitely cares about GPA and SAT more than other schools. However, your son sounds like he’s in a fine place, especially if he was already accepted in terms of prescreening.

His weighted GPA is 4.3… I hoping that they took all of this into consideration and that if they accepted him via his prescreen, then academically he is ok.

Inspired59: That’s an awesome GPA. He already passed his pre-screen, so I’m pretty sure that means that he is good to go academically! Ask others to make sure though.

Inspired59 ~ I don’t think you are invited to audition if you don’t meet the academic requirements. At least that was the case in the audition cycle three years ago.
