Your EC’s are not the most outstanding, which is a problem for the ivies, however quality research can get you very far for both MIT and Caltech. The difficulty of your school also matters somewhat, but with a 36 on the ACT you have an ok shot at all these schools. They are still probably reaches just because of their highly selective natures, but it is slightly more reasonable for you. Try doing something that doesn’t put you in the stereotypical, and highly competitive, asian category.

well it should be something kind of unique that makes you stand out from your peers and fellow asian. I mean you are clearly a different person, its just that many of your EC’s seem very… asian. I don’t mean that to offend you at all but like, tennis, violin, piano, and academic EC’s are like that. It is a little late, but here are some examples of different kinds of EC’s: ballroom dancing, playing the harp, rock climbing, just stuff that is different. At this point though I would just keep putting pressure on your research and hope to be an Intel semi-finalist or something.

^ I don’t mind informed posters’ putting up some reasonable percentages if they qualify them as approximations, but the ones I see on this forum (such as those in this thread) indicate that the posters are not knowledgeable about college admissions.

i don’t think they understand your EC’s
MIT and Cal emphasize uniqueness and creativity in your science based Ec’s
your “casual projects” give you a slight advantage, also the 2nd place at ISEF is a great achievement

What ECs, awards, achievements in science and non-science areas would be most ideal for MIT, etc.? I would not do an ec just for my college application, and I am out of time anyway to make any significant changes to my application, so I am speaking from a hypothetical standpoint. What kind of specific things would be impressive and unique for admission to MIT?
