Hi, I'm a rising senior in Ohio and this is what I'm expecting my college apps to look like. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I'll chance you back if you want me to as well.

I'm considering majoring in some type of Engineering (probably Chemical or Biomedical) at:
Stanford
MIT
Cornell
Caltech
Northwestern
Johns Hopkins
Duke
Georgia Tech
University of Michigan
Purdue University
University of Cincinnati

Please give me your thoughts and I'll chance you back!

Stanford reach but good shot
MIT: high match
Cornell match
CalTech Don’t know
Northwestern duke & JHU match
The rest are definite safeties. You look good!

Stanford - High reach
MIT - High reach
Cornell - Low Reach
Caltech - High reach
Northwestern - High match
Johns Hopkins - Low reach
Duke - Low Reach
Georgia Tech - Low match
University of Michigan - Low Match
Purdue University - Low match
University of Cincinnati - Safety

The other poster slightly underestimates MIT, especially with a low ACT math and SAT II math (which you said you would fix, so no worries)…but my rankings all change if you are a recruit. Your rank and scores are all very nice, but your EC’s are sort of average. I hope this helps! Good luck :)

Thanks guys, your comments are greatly appreciated! If anyone has any suggestions for some more match/low reach schools that would be greatly appreciated aswell!

Thanks for the suggestions! I have definitely looked at UC Berkeley, but I don’t think I would get any financial aid there and that would be an issue. I’m not thinking I’ll be leaving the US so India Institute of Technology is out of the question. I’ll have to take a look at UPenn now aswell! Thanks!

Very high reach/reject for the schools above, unless you are good enough at football or track to be recruited. Your numbers are fine (except for your math SAT II) but extracurriculars are too weak to make you competitive at these schools.

Northwestern
Johns Hopkins

These are high match/low reach schools for you. With good essays and letters of recommendation, you might get in, though it’s hardly a guarantee. Apply ED to either school and your chances of admission increase dramatically.

University of Michigan
Purdue University
University of Cincinnati

Barring any surprises you will be admitted to these schools.

I am unfamiliar with Georgia Tech’s admissions standards, so I cannot chance you there. The India Institute of Technology suggestion made me laugh though.

Stanford - High Match/ Low Reach
MIT - Reach
Cornell - High Match
Caltech - Reach
Northwestern - Low Reach
Johns Hopkins - High Match
Duke - High Match/ Low Reach
Georgia Tech - Match
University of Michigan - Match
Purdue University - Match
University of Cincinnati - Match

Thanks everyone! Those of you that left links have been chanced back! Everything you guys have said is greatly appreciated! A few quick things to add:

Football takes up an ungodly amount of my time which may be why my ECs are a little below average. During the season I spend around 25-30 hours a week doing football related things and around 10-15 hours a week in the offseason. I won’t be recruited by the schools on my list because of my size (small offensive lineman=no recruiting), but if there was some way I could convey how dedicated I am to football maybe that would help?

An EC I forgot to mention is being a member of a roller coaster club. The club I’m in is international, meaning there is members from all over creation. Basically we have large get togethers at amusement parks throughout the year and ride roller coasters. While not riding roller coasters we discuss the physics, design/construction process, and logistics of these roller coasters. This may be something rather unique that I could include in my applications. Give me your thoughts on this?

Extremely high reaches (especially for BME). Johns Hopkins might take you if you apply with a different major because BME is extremely competitive there. Applying ED will help immensely too. Your EC’s are lacking too much to put you in the run for a spot at these schools. An engineering internship or project can really help you bolster your application (if you have created a spectacular roller coaster model as a part of your club, it would help a lot in this area)

Duke
Georgia Tech
Northwestern

High match/Low reach. These should be your target/realistic reach schools. Sure apply to the others but don’t waste your ED/REA choice on Stanford because it won’t help you any more than if you apply ED to Stanford, MIT, etc. Duke ED or JHU ED are your best bets atm.

University of Michigan
Purdue University
University of Cincinnati

Low match/safeties. Just don’t ■■ up the interview/essays/recs and you’re in good shape. Honestly these safeties are great schools as well and whatever school you choose out of your list will serve you well. Good luck!

Thanks! Could anyone possibly give more insight into the two things I posted earlier about football and my roller coaster club? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

You could write about it in your essay if you want. By putting the years/weeks/hours you do on your app they’ll see you spent a lot of time at practice and such. Roller coaster club sounds different but it doesn’t show a lot of dedication and passion if you only meet a few times a year to ride coasters, put it down and see.

Thanks for your thoughts! I know this’ll probably sound as if I am making excuses, but the reason the roller coaster club only meets a few times a year is because it isn’t feasible to meet as often as once a week. A ticket to an amusement park is expensive and that is in addition to travel and food. I’m about a dedicated as I financially can be to the club. I’m just not sure how I’ll explain that through my application…

i think u have solid stat and good ec that would give u good shot for most schools. do well on ur essay and that wil make u stand out
good luck!
