International Ib student from Italy who just applied to MIT early action. 1510 on SAT (780 math 730 reading); 44 predicted grade with Math, Bio and English A Higher Level and Chemistry, Business and Italian Standard level; good EC’s and recruited for a minor sport as well. I took 2 subject tests: 760 in Math 2 and 700 in biology. What are my chances in your opinion?
I’m pretty sure this has been said many times but MIT doesn’t only look at test scores. That’s just the qualifying bar. According to some other CC person, a 700 is enough in Subject Tests (I can’t confirm, but MIT Chris can). Your SAT score is high enough as well. The important thing, then, is your essays and your EC’s. You might want to describe them in more detail if you’d like the people here to judge your acceptance rate more accurately.
Do keep in mind that applying as an international applicant means an acceptance rate much lower than the 7% they have posted.
(Also, take all advice on CC with a grain of salt, unless they actually are from MIT Admissions.)
Your admission chance is pretty low. On one hand, MIT doesn’t get a lot of international applicants from East/Southern Europe, but your scores are a little low for MIT. I’m also not sure about your grades because in America grades are out of 100 so a 44 would be failing, could you give some context on the grading system you use, because on google most of it says Italy is out of 30. The IB does help you in comparison to others. But with any international student, it’s hard to predict outcomes.
“760 in Math 2 and 700 in biology” are very good or excellent for the vast majority of universities, and are okay for Ivy League level schools. For MIT or Caltech they are low. 760 in math is sort of almost okay for MIT. 700 in biology is low for MIT.
I think that you might have some chance, but I would certainly focus on other schools now that your MIT application is in.
