I'm a white female from rural NC, applying ED to the theatre department.
I have good ECs- lots of leads in theatre, leadership roles in drama, dance, voice, marching band, winterguard and online classes through the NC School of Science and Math.
I've taken the hardest classes possible at my school, and at NCSSM Online. GPA is a 4.3 weighted, 3.7 unweighted. My class rank is undetermined, but I am top 20 out of 350ish.
My ACT is a 31 (uneven distribution, 36 in reading and 24 in math) but that should improve by November.
I've taken three APs so far, and will be taking eight next year.
(also they keep emailing me, telling me to consider NW). Do I have a chance?

Just FYI: Colleges do not discriminate when they send out emails or even paper mail. Receiving such emails only indicates the fact that you scored somewhere above a 180 on the PSAT, have taken an AP exam, or have taken the SAT and have signed up to receive emails/slug mail from universities through College Board’s programs. Universities know nothing about you beyond your name, the fact that you scored above the (extremely low) cutoff (note that they still don’t know exactly how high your score is), and perhaps ethnicity/religion.
Mail should be used as anything but an indicator of admission chances.

Could you guys please chance me also. It would be a huge help! :)

GPA: 3.8

ACT: Still low, 25

At my school, honors are out of 5.0 and AP are out of 6.0. I know general emails aren’t good indicators, but they emailed me about my specific score (31). I sent them some ACT scores b/c my school encouraged it.

@sergiok, you have great ECs, but that ACT really needs to come up if you’re going to be a competitive candidate. Maybe look at some test score optional schools, b/c the rest of your app is stellar.

Could it be a match if my GPA rose to a 3.8, and ACT to a 33?
Also could it help if apply ED? I’m considering that, but can’t decide for sure until I go visit early this fall.

Northwestern’s acceptance rate is 13.9%. I would say that it is on the high side of a low reach.

It’s 13.9%.
[The Daily Northwestern : Northwestern acceptance rate drops to all-time low of 13.9 percent](Northwestern acceptance rate drops to all-time low of 13.9 percent)
Collegeboard’s stats are either outdated or a combination ED and RD.

Disregarding the acceptance rate, your GPA and ACT make you a reach. Try to bring you your GPA and ACT score to at least 3.85+ and 33+. Particularly, you need to bring up your Math score. Less than 25% admitted students have 30 or lower in any section.

But will ED help my chances? I’ve heard it does at some schools, but not at others.

[The Daily Northwestern : Northwestern acceptance rate drops to all-time low of 13.9 percent](Northwestern acceptance rate drops to all-time low of 13.9 percent) according to this 32% get in ED

ED would help those at or above average of admission stat. When you get GPA and scores below average, you would likely got deferred or rejected. Most of the students apply ED have great credentials. It is not that everyone apply early would get a higher chance.

I thought it could give you a boost though, because they are sure you’re going to matriculate.

^ For top schools, they worry less you are not going. That’s why the Stanford waiting list is mostly a joke. Northwestern has a 44.5 yield rate this year, while Harvard has 82% yield. So they worry less to miss qualified candidates from ED. Indeed, the rejection rate from SCEA at Stanford is very high. Most don’t even got deferred. They know what kind of candidates they are looking for in the ED/EA and they don’t really need to lower the standard. If you do have at least the quality of average admitted students, then ED would definitely help your chance.

Note that the higher the yield, the lower the acceptance rate the following year. At the end, they want to achieve certain number of students. The yield at Northwestern is at all time high, that explains the all time low acceptance rate. UMich is going through this too. There is a higher than expected yield this year and it is running out of dorm space again. It is expected the acceptance rate to drop further next year.

but a 31 and a 3.7 with great essays and ECs is average, right? A 31 is middle 50 I think.

It seems you don’t quite understand what mid 50 means. It is the range for the 25th to 75th percentile. The mid 50 ACT for Northwestern is 31-34. That means 31 is at 25%. Average uw GPA is around 3.9 for all top schools. Even UMich has an average GPA of 3.83. The stat for Northwestern is likely to increase as the acceptance rate has decreased. Anyway, 31 and 3.7 is below average and is at around 25% for Northwestern. Note that the mid 50 for ACT math score is 29-34, so the Math score at 24 may even lower your chance. You should try to raise your score for a better chance.
