Do you think I can get in to NYU CAS? What about Stern? Or Columbia? My rank isn't good because I don't have a lot of credit because of my foreign exchange but do you think this experience can actually help me with admissions?

All of these schools are going to be reaches unless you can pull your Writing and Math up. However, you most likely would be able to get in Stern given your rigorous coursework and your perfect reading. CAS at NYU would be a bit tricky since you have a bit of low writing score but hey you never know ;). Columbia you are at a 50/50 chance, but don’t give up!!! I know you will do fine. If your essays are good and you continue your rigorous coursework, you will get into at least Stern or CAS at NYU. But Columbia may be a bit of a reach but def. not out of reach Hope this helps!!!

Why would the writing score be of concern? Especially since at CAS since it is by far easier to get into than Stern?
I think I will end up retaking my SAT next year, I’m pleased with my reading score but I really messed up on Math and Writing.
Thanks

Yeah, and that is why I say retake your SAT’s and you will have a greater chance at getting into both of those NYU schools. Plus it will help increase your Columbia admissions chances. Bottom line is, you should be confident in getting into either of the NYU schools and/or Columbia. Your academics are not bad at all for admission to these schools, just work on your SATs and you will be solid. :)

Okay! I am kind of reluctant to work on the SATs again though!
I studied nonstop for a month for the January one and took 10 practice tests (and scored 2200 to 2300 on all of them!) and then on the actual test got a 2130.
I will consider doing it again though, perhaps next fall.
Thanks!
Anyone else?

thanks you guys!
rayna3- I have had interest in Japan since I was young. I didn’t do an exchange through a program but studied Japanese language only at a center for foreigners. Luckily I got the approval of my school so it all worked out. It was an incredibly enriching experience!

Oh that’s awesome! so a language school? was it in tokyo? your soo lucky. my school doesn’t accept credit from other schools… even colleges. I wanted to take Japanese at the local college, but nooo they don’t accept it =(

no it was in ***uoka, japan! it was great!
i’m actually planning on going back this summer :D

and I’m set on retaking SAT in May. Hopefully I can really do well this time.
NYU is definitely my #1 choice so I think I’m planning on doing early decision. That helps right?

You may wish to put a bit of emphasis for the whole “foreign-exchange affecting my GPA”. Not only does this sound like a very unique experience [that even lead to your apparent fluency in the language!], but it would explain your less appealing rank. Depending on how you present it, your explanation may help or hinder you application. Make sure it comes off as a near-justification, and not a vacation haha :)

aww that’s so awesome! your so lucky, I begged my parents for years to let me go, even learning Japanese on my own in the meantime. Still no. I’m planning to go with my friend summer before senior year so I can the JLPT 1 and EJU.

I think with your unique experiences, NYU will be a high match if you play your cards correctly.
