Chance me for NYU ED1, and ED2 for UoM, Emory, BC, BU

Is “coming from Nevada” good or bad for her admission chance to NYU?

Far better than coming from Jersey I think :-). Jersey is a great place. Don’t get me wrong . But for college admissions, I would guess Nevada is better. Other things equal – class rigor etc.

Reno will be great and your daughter has a chance at your entire list…chance.

Hopefully you apply early - where you’re able - and hit the Emory merit deadline.

Good luck to her - she’ll find a wonderful school.

Of course, Emory, Michigan, and BC are very different than NYU and BU so hopefully she’s got a fit vs. chasing the names.

Good luck

We’ve got better pizza :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

But yes, Nevada provides geographic diversity at NYU so that’s an edge.

Hi, so sorry to bother you, but would you mind tell me if your daughter get into NYU Ed1? Because the background + scores+ activities are all soooo gud, and if you don’t even get into NYU ed 1 then what do they want…

She got rejected :frowning:
I don’t think she got rejected because of her academic stats… Her essays were bit sloppily done. She regretted not applying ED1 to Emory where they had 37% rate. ED2 rate is lower than the ED1 but with her revised essays, we are being hopeful.

Don’t regret. You ED to your top choice. If NYU was the top choice and you felt confident stat wise, you made the right call.

You can always apply ED2 to Emory - if ED is something you want to do. This is precisely why schools like Emory offer ED2. But if the essays are sloppy, tighten them up.

According to her counselor, she has a very strong case for Emory ED2. However in the past, usually kids got in for RD. I think because Emory knows RD kids from her school has higher stats since they all applied for Emory’s merit scholarship way back in Nov.
Also, per her school’s naviance, historically not many kids applied to Emory. Only Top 1-3 % kids seemed to apply because of merit. Around 6-8 kids (out of 350) applied to Emory each year and always 2 kids got admitted each year in the past. This year so far, 11 kids applied (all RD) and my DD is the only one going for ED2. Also, my sister is a professor at Emory and we can check off a box where it’s asking if any relative working for Emory. I know that doesn’t mean anything for her admission but at least it will show her motivation to attend.
My DD has been re-editing her essays to show her fit with school.

I am not a counselor but logically I would disagree.

I assume you applied RD by the “merit” deadline for Emory - which is months before the RD deadline.

Schools that offer ED know RD offers nothing definitive. Kids apply to RD because it’s not their top choice or because they need to see offers. After all, Emory is expensive.

If you are turned down ED and change your RD to ED2, you still hit the merit deadline although anecdotally, a school would have little need to offer ED students money (some do I know).

It makes no sense that Emory would prefer an RD over ED - because ED is a guaranteed butt in seat, a guaranteed form of revenue. An RD is still a risk - and in the case of Emory, their last published yield is 34% - so a third of kids accepted enroll. Take out ED and it’s lower!!!

Now - if you were to say, I’d love Emory but can’t afford full pay and I don’t qualify for need aid - then yes ED is wrong.

But - and again I’m not a counselor - but I see zero logic for Emory preference or better odds at RD over ED. But I see why a student (like my daughter that loved Emory) applied RD - because dad wasn’t footing $80K+ a year and we needed the merit to consider attending.

I would say ED is your best odds (not counting merit), then RD. Of course, adding Oxford can only help. And Emory WL a ton - more than 6500 offered my daughter’s year for a class of 1500 (of which 3883 joined) - so assuming she’s there stats wise, that’s the worst case - but it’s also a ridiculously unfair and false hope they set by adding so many. Unless you were one of the 21 that got in.

Best of luck whatever she decides - but as she applied to NYU ED, I would assume the finances work so ED2 (in my opinion) would give her a far better chance at Emory. Both meet need (if that’s a concern - to which you can run the NPC).

Good luck

My DD didn’t apply for merit at EMORY in last Nov because her number 1 choice and dream school was NYU back then so applying for Emory merit was not an option for us. When she was choosing for her ED1 school earlier, she was going back and forth between NYU and Emory. She really liked both schools, but obviously went with NYU. We knew she would do ED2 if she doesn’t get in to NYU. We are just being nervous that ED 2 admission chance is way lower (around 15%) than the ED1.
Yes, we are okay with financial and we were actually hesitant whether to file Fafsa and CSS to NYU but we did. Although we don’t expect much assistance from Emory (maybe none), we will still apply for FA.

Thank you

Understood

Just for future parents - Emory has merit based aid but you must apply prior to nov 15 to qualify. So if you plan to ED2 or RD, you still have to beat that date. You can always apply RD and then change to ED2. I remember we got that letter of persuasion as they want people to ED.

But make sure your app is in by Nov 15, even if you plan to ED elsewhere (in case you don’t get in).

Thanks!!

(self-evident / deleted…)

If she applied ED2, she has to withdraw - correct?

Yes, my daughter already withdrew applications from her RD schools after we paid the deposit to Emory.

Congrats!!! Do you mind sharing how she fared at her EA schools?

Thanks!
She applied EA to Case Western and Northeastern. They both deferred her.
