I'm looking to apply for the recorded music program at Tisch, so I know it's half portfolio half academic. I'm just hoping the academic side will be good enough to get me in!

I don’t know, NYU is pretty selective

What are your EC’s in music besides the ones you listed? Have you written music? A girl from my daughter’s school attends that program and she had an amazing resume. My daughter will be attending Tisch this fall and it is 50% portfolio which includes a resume. Your list does to scream music to me. Your academics are fine. Apply ED to improve your chances.

Your SAT scores are good but the GPA is a little low, both weighted and unweighted

@cschauf1 i was in school band from 5th to 10th grade, drumline from 8th to 10th grade, i learned how to play percussion in 5th grade, i bought and learned how to play drumset in 7th grade, i taught myself how to play keyboard in 8th grade, I taught myself how to play ukulele in 10th grade, i taught myself how to play guitar 10th-11th grade, ive helped lead services (singing/playing guitar) at my temple, the songleading for my youth groups involves leading services and mini- concerts for groups of 300 plus teens. Ive also written songs/ covers and im hoping to start performing at open mic nights soon. Do you think thatll be enough?

@cschauf1 oh also i forgot that the leadership camp i went to was for songleading! so it was mostly learning leadership, performance, and guitar skills :)

The person at Clive Davis had won several contests and had recorded songs. What about Steinhardt instead of Tisch? You would have a better shot. Clive Davis Recorded Music takes very few students so to be honest, your resume does not sound as professional as the girl who attends. You sound very interested in music, but have not done anything that screams star. Look at NYU Steinhardt for songwriting as an alternative. Even for film, my daughter had won film contests.

I just read more detail about your experience and it seems to be camp related. My daughter was a CIT and junior counselor at a sleepaway camp in MA. She worked in the drama department and was a camper the previous 9 years… It was a very small item on her resume. It shows leadership but not enough on the music side. You need the open mike nights and recordings. Do you have any contacts to help produce your music for your portfolio? Enter contests, perform, produce. Intern at a music studio. You sound like a great well rounded person-you just need the packaging. by the way my daughter’s grades we’re about 3.5 or 3.55 and a 32 ACT. She had same math, same reading but 34 Science and 31 writing. It is an excellent score for NYU. Her resume and film were excellent. Clive Davis portfolio sounds tough.

Your gpa and test scores are no problem. So don’t worry about the academic side of your application. Concentrate on your portfolio and music experience. I agree that you should try to do an internship related to music if at all possible.

@Cschauf1 @uskoolfish thank you both so much! my only problem is that ive tried to get an internship in the music industry, but everywhere ive asked has told me that i have to be at least an upperclassman in a music bussiness program in college.
