So what is the chance of me getting into NYU Stern?

Yeah, I know I'm severely lacking in the SAT and standardized test areas (and seemingly not so hot in Math)... I'm going to be retaking all of it in October and November one last time. What are the usual stats of students entering Stern? NYU Stern is one of my top choices, so I'll be really disheartened if I don't get in. :( And do I lack awards? I really have never entered many "real competitions" which I feel insecure about that now...

And one important question about NYU app. I noticed on the NYU supplement undergrad form, they ask you five questions (ie. what song would you sing at a talent show, why NYU, etc); are you supposed to answer all five in five individual essays? Or do you pick a couple that you want to write? Or are they supposed to be short answer where you write your answer in the small space provided?

Right now Stern is a reach for you. Your ECs and GPA looks fine but your SAT scores, while good, are severely below NYU’s and Stern’s average. The average SAT score(m+cr) for Stern is 1445 and your 1280 is 160 points below that and the adcoms won’t like your low SAT II Math score.

Don’t be afraid to apply to Stern but make sure you raise your scores. Also, the five questions are short answers.

Good Luck.

Ohh I see, so NYU only looks at math+creative reading? And not writing?
And thank you for answering the question! A lot of my friends have been wondering what we were supposed to do with the 5 questions on the NYU app.
Thank you for your immensely great help. :)

Well not exactly, NYU puts less weight on the writing section than on the math and critical reading sections, so it still counts.

Okay, thanks. :]

CAS is still a reach, because of that SAT and those Subject tests. ( Look up NYU’s new policy)

Thanks for the comments yelloworangeman and NuclearPakistan1. And I’m not going to apply to CAS. It’s either Stern or not going to NYU. (My first priority is UPenn anyways.)

I was already aware of NYU’s new policy a couple months back. I don’t see how it can hurt me. I’m still going to either do the 1 SAT + 2 SATIIs or ACT. I’m retaking ACT as well… I know I’ll do better in English section after raising my writing score in the SAT, and science I’ll just practice.

If you are Asian and female, it’s going to be a bit tough because you are competing with other Asian females with 2200 (+/-100) SAT scores. Yeah, and being Asian, the math score needs to be near perfect (not exaggerating, haha). Anyways, my two cents.

first generation DOES matter. Go ahead and apply – write a great essay on being first generation at college. Nice job getting the writing score up on second SAT!
